Kenneth Lee Biggs1,2,3
M, b. February 13, 1940, d. June 25, 2017
Kenneth Lee Biggs was buried at Beulah Church Cemetery, Georgetown, Putnam Co., Florida.1 He Kenneth Lee Biggs, 77, of Crescent City, passed away at his home Sunday, June 25, 2017, after an extended illness. Affectionally known as Kenny or "Digger" by so many, he was originally from Georgetown. His father, Thomas S. Biggs, was a commercial fisherman on the St. Johns River and his mother, Clara Bell Summersill Biggs, retired from a career as a licensed practical nurse. He was raised on the river but attended school in Crescent City. After graduating as class president in 1957, he moved to DeLand and attended Stetson University while working part time at Allen Summerhill Funeral Home. It was clear caring for families and helping them through their time of loss was both his talent and calling. In 1960, he moved to Nashville, Tenn., to attend the John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science. He returned to Volusia County and opened his first funeral home in Orange City. He eventually landed in Lake City in 1964, where he owned and operated Biggs Funeral Home for 40 years. Along with serving the families of Columbia County, he was passionate about serving the community. He served many years on City Council for Lake City and was an active member in numerous charitable and civic organizations, including being past president of the Jaycees and Lions Club in Lake City, and held membership in the Moose Lodge in Lake City and Crescent City. He was a Mason and member of Lake City Lodge 127, F&AM. A member of the Lake City Shrine Club, he was a part of the Motorcycle Brigade in parades and was a noble of the Mystic Shrine. He was the first general in the re-enactment at the annual Olustee Battle Festival. Other community involvement included founding of the Golden Age Senior Center for the Council on Aging in Lake City, developing the Florida Gateway Pro Rodeo (PRCA) in Lake City and bringing the first AKC Dog Show to Lake City and served on the Columbia County Resources board, which put on the annual fair. He was likewise the founder of the Boys Club and was honored by the Boys Club of America as Man of the Year. He was also a member of the Florida Funeral Directors Association and the Independent Funeral Directors Association of Florida. He was eager to return to Crescent City, and in 2002, he became the owner and operator of Clayton Frank and Biggs Funeral Home. He quickly re-acclimated back into the community, and true to form, he continued to serve the people of Putnam County. Upon his return to Putnam County, he became a member of the Rotary Club of Crescent City and two years later served as president. He was also a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Fruitland. He had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed spending time with friends, traveling across the nation and to Florida Gators football games. He especially loved boating and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, celebrating 60 years as a funeral director only one week ago. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, William Albert and Thomas S. Biggs Jr; and a sister, Edna Mae Biggs. He is survived by a sister, Betty Faye Biggs Stidham; his wife, Teres Biggs; two daughters, Kendra Biggs Therrell and Beth Biggs Johnson; two sons-in-law, Jay Therrell and Matt Johnson; two stepchildren, Richard Hillyard (Tish) and Christy Thistleton; and five grandchildren, Paul Therrell, Gabriel Johnson, Kathryn Hillyard, Amanda Hillyard and Shea Thistleton.3 He was born on February 13, 1940 at Georgetown, Putnam Co., Florida.1,3 He married Helen Elizabeth Martin, daughter of Bernard Martin and Helen Genevieve Perry, in September, 1963 at Volusia Co., Florida.2 Kenneth Lee Biggs and Helen Elizabeth Martin were divorced on November 18, 1980 at Columbia Co., Florida.4 Kenneth Lee Biggs died on June 25, 2017 at Crescent City, Putnam Co., Florida, at age 77.3,1
