Lynn Leigh Hochuli1,2

F, b. March 15, 1957, d. November 12, 1980
Lynn Leigh Hochuli A routine trip to the bank Wednesday ended in the strangulation deaths of a Columbus burglary detective's 23-year-old daughter and his 2-year-old grandson. Police found the bodies of Lynn Vest and her nephew, Jeremy Pickens. about midnight in the back seat of a car on an East Side vacant lot. The two were reported missing nine hours earlier by Detective Donald Hochuli, the woman's father, and her husband, Dennis Vest. Police said thev did not know whether the slain woman had any money with her. No motive for the slayings bas been established. Franklin County Coroner William Adrion said both victims apparently were strangled. There were several bruise marks on the woman's neck, according a coroner's spokesman. The boy had slight bruise marks on his neck. leading police to speculate he may have been smothered as well as strangled. Nothing that might have been used in the killings was found in the blue 1979 Ford Mustang. The bodies, which were covered with a bedsheet, were fully clothed and had not been sexually molested, police said. Autopsies were performed Thursday. "At this point we have absolutely nothing to go on," said Detective Sgt. John Shawkey. The bodies were found by Officers Jerre Martin and Denny Garver in the lot at E. Main St. and Berkelev Rd. a few miles west of the East Side bank Mrs. Vest was traveling to. The father of the dead boy said, "I really don't think revenge had anything to do with it," when asked if Hochuli's work had connection with the killings. The Vests, who had been married four years, lived at 4012 E. Fulton St., about two miles from Jeremy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Pickens Jr. of 425 S. Yearling Rd., Whitehall. Mrs. Vest and Cheryl Pickens, 19, were sisters. Hochuli and his wife have one other daughter, Tracy, 21. Pickens said Mrs. Vest often acted as a baby sitter for Jeremy. He and the Vests' 1½-year-old son, Shane, played together. Pickens said Mrs. Vest and Jeremie left the Vests' home about 11:30 a.m. to go to the Ohio State Bank in the Great Eastern Shopping Center at Hamilton Rd. and Main St. Her husband stayed at home with Shane. Vest became worried, Pickens said, when his wife did not return home by 3 p.m., when he was scheduled to leave for work at the Emery Air Freight facility at Port Columbus. Hochuli and Vest reported the two missing and the search began. The woman, who was 5 feet 6 inches tall with blond hair and blue eyes. was wearing blue jeans and a ski jacket. The blond boy was wearing a blue hooded jacket and blue pants. Pickens said the sisters were "quite close" and the two youngsters "got along together real well." Police Thursday planned to retrace the route the woman may have taken to the bank and were going to question anyone who might have seen the two. They were also checking the car for fingerprints and interviewing the victims' families.3 Her Social Security Number was 295-62-8720.2 She was buried at Glen Rest Memorial Estate, 8029 East Main Street, Reynoldsburg, Franklin Co., Ohio.4 She was born on March 15, 1957 at Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio.2,4,5 As of September 11, 1976,her married name was Vest.1 She married Dennis Allan Vest, son of Bobby Vest and Anna Nordeen Cochran, on September 11, 1976 at Franklin Co., Ohio.1 Lynn Leigh Hochuli died on November 12, 1980 at Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, at age 23; The Ohio Death Records have a death date of Nov 13, 1980.2,4,6
