Deputy Barry Pendry, of Capito Street Northeast, Roanoke, a jail employee since 1976, was dispensing medication when he was attacked by an inmate and struck several times in the head with an oxygen tank, Roanoke Sheriff W. Alvin Hudson said. "He was beat up pretty bad," Hudson told reporters Tuesday night. Kenny D. Edmonds, 34, of South Boston, is suspected in the beating death, Hudson said, but no charges had been filed late Tuesday. Edmonds had been in the jail since October awaiting trial on a charge of malicious wounding in connection with the Sept. 5, 1984, stabbing of a Roanoke bus driver. Pendry, who was working a 3-11 p.m. shift, had just started making his rounds, handing out medicine to six inmates in the fourth-floor infirmary when the attack occurred. Hudson said an inmate jumped Pendry when the paramedic opened his cell door. Hudson said that before Deputy Jerry Hayes, the only other officer on duty on that floor, could reach the infirmary, "the inmate got hold of an oxygen tank and struck (Pendry) in the head several times." Hudson said Pendry was pronounced dead at the scene. He said the attack was "totally unprovoked" a and lasted only "a minute or two." He said only one inmate is believed to have been involved in the killing. Hudson said deputies and paramedics have been attacked in the jail before, but this was the first fatal assault." "It's very hard to accept. (Pendry) was one of the best paramedics you could ever hope to have," he said. "People talk about Mecklenburg being dangerous," Hudson said, referring to the maximum-security Mecklenburg Correctional Center in Southside Virginia. "Here in the Roanoke City Jail we get some of the most hardened criminals in the state. We handle over 13,000 inmates a year." He said there were 190 inmates in the jail Tuesday when the attack occurred. Hudson called reporters into his office after Pendry's widow and mother had been notified. The sheriff said Pendry was a former captain of the Williamson Road Lifesaving and First Aid Crew. "He was like a brother to me," said Dennis Steffey, who succeeded Pendry as captain of the crew last July. "He joined the junior crew in 1971 at the same time I joined the senior crew." Pendry moved to the Cave Spring Lifesaving Crew in August. Steffey described Pendry as a "go-getter. There was a lot of motivation behind him." Steffey said he heard of Pendry's death about an hour after the attack. "I heard the call go out and thought it was just another call. Course I had no idea it was Barry. .. He was sharp and conscientious in his job. He was very cool-headed in an emergency. Roanoke has lost one fine man." "If you're involved in any type of police work, you have to live with that danger," Steffey said. Edmonds was charged in September in the wounding of Luther George Crowder, a Valley Metro bus driver who was stabbed in the back as he was walking through downtown Roanoke during his lunch break. on February 27, 1985.⁶
