R. "Rick" Thornton, 47, a former Peninsula resident, died Wednesday at home. He lived in Newport News for 26 years. He was an electrical engineer for Protecon Communications in Atlanta. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Cecil B. Iva Tighhman of Newport News; and a brother, Jack Thornton of Erial, N.J. on September 11, 1987.⁵

     Velda Alma Meadows Velda Alma Thornton, age 93, of Roderfield, W.Va., passed away Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Golden Harvest of Welch Community Hospital, Welch, W.Va. Born in Mercer County, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late J.W. and Cora Jennings Meadows. She was a former resident of Richmond, Va. and Mullens, W.Va. for several years and more recently with her sister, Tootsie Falvo of Roderfield, W.Va. She was a member of Eastern Star. Also, she was a beautician for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl Thornton; one sister, Lois Meadows; and one brother, Mason Meadows. Survivors include one brother, Clifton Meadows, Mullens, W.Va; three sisters, Mrs. Tootsie Falvo, Roderfield, W.Va. with whom she made her home, Mrs. Ralph (Gloria) Payne of Beckley, W.Va. and Mrs. Gene (Charlotte) Johnson, Amigo, W.Va; several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow at Rest Haven, Princeton, W.Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
