Robert Emory Dewese Robert E. Dewese, May 3, 1942 - Sep 9, 2022. Robert Emory Dewese - On Friday, September 9, 2022 of Gaithersburg, MD passed peacefully. Bob was the beloved husband of nearly 58 years to Mary Anne Dewese; loving father of Sharon Townsend (Paul), the late Andrew Dewese (former spouse Lynn), and Robert Dewese (Erica). He was the cherished grandfather of Kristen Townsend, Katherine Townsend, Andrew Dewese, Dustin Dewese, Jordan Edwards, and Austin Dewese; and 7 great-grandchildren. He is survived by sisters-in-law Andrea Posner (late Michael) and Cynthia Mattson (Ken Jones) and many other loving relatives and friends. Bob was born in 1942 in Glen Lyn, VA to Vada Clemens and Harold Dewese. He had a simple upbringing in the foothills of the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains. Bob was an avid sportsman and excelled athletically throughout his entire life. He graduated from Petersburg (WV) High School, where he was named Team Co-Captain for his Varsity Football and Basketball teams, and excelled in baseball. In his senior year, he was also named Best Dancer from the Class of 1961. After high school, Bob joined the United States Marine Corps, and served honorably through December 1965, attaining the rank of Lance Corporal. While at Quantico MCB, he was a member of the USMC Devil Dogs Football team. After leaving the Marine Corps, Bob continued his athletic endeavors playing semi-pro football. For several years, he played in the Atlantic Coast Football League as a Tight End for the Virginia Sailors and the Capital Colts. Bob met his wife Mary Anne while he was stationed at Quantico. After he left the Marines, they moved to Bethesda to raise their family. He continued in the ACFL, and began his career as a Lithographer at the US Government Printing Office (GPO). In 1967, Bob transitioned to Haynes Lithograth in Rockville (which eventually became Holladay-Tyler Printing Corporation). He retired in 2001 when the company was purchased by a Canadian firm and closed down operations. As his family grew up, Bob coached his sons in football and baseball with the Gaithersburg Sports Association (GSA) youth football and baseball teams, including as the coach of the GSA Montgomery County Boys Baseball Association (MCBBA) travel baseball team. He also coached Maplewood (Bethesda) football teams. As his children grew, Bob continued his athletic endeavors, competing both locally and nationally. Bob was a Senior Softball and Baseball Champion – named All Tournament, All World, and MVP in various seasons – with multiple leagues and teams over the past 40+ years, including: International Softball Federation (ISF), American Softball Association (ASA), International Senior Softball Association (ISSA), Softball Players Association (SPA), Maryland Senior Olympics, Roy Hobbs Baseball Championship MVP. In March 2016, Bob was inducted into the Maryland Slow Pitch Softball Hall of Fame, and named one of the best Defensive Pitchers nationally. In all of his endeavors, Bob encouraged everyone – his children and extended family members, his teams and teammates, his co-workers and friends – to perform to the best of their abilities. He was a proud family man, a hard-working man’s man, and a committed companion, best friend, and soulmate to his wife Mary Anne. He was always willing to lend a hand to friends, family, and strangers; and his wry smile and warm personality will truly be missed. As he liked to say, “Be Good”. Mary Anne Mattson1
F, b. November 20, 1938, d. November 5, 2023
Mary Anne Mattson It is with deep sadness that we share the loss of Mary Georgia Anne Dewese of Gaithersburg, MD. Mary Anne passed away on Sunday, November 5th, 2023, with her family around her. She was the beloved wife of nearly 58 years to the late Robert Emory Dewese; the loving mother of Sharon Townsend (Paul), the late Andrew Dewese (former spouse Lynn), and Robert Dewese (Erica). She was the cherished grandmother of Kristen Townsend, Katherine Townsend, Andrew Dewese, Dustin Dewese, Jordan Edwards, and Austin Dewese; and 8 great-grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Andrea Posner (late Michael) and Cynthia Mattson (Ken Jones) and many other loving relatives and friends. Mary Anne was born on November 20, 1938, to George and Charlotte Mattson of Salem, New Jersey. She spent many cherished years growing up in Maplewood, New Jersey. Mary Anne always spoke fondly of her childhood home and the town where she created many memories of ice skating, participating in Field Day competitions, dressing up as Annie Oakley with her six-shooters, and playing in some of the largest snowfalls in Maplewood with her sisters and friends. Mary Anne met the love of her life, Bob, while he was stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. After Bob left the Marines, Mary Anne and Bob moved to Bethesda, Maryland, to raise their family. Not long after the move to Bethesda, they moved again to Gaithersburg, Maryland for a quieter pace, in a neighborhood surrounded by wooded areas and cow pastures. It was here that Mary Anne accepted a position with the National Bureau of Standards (NBS), later renamed the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). She also pursued further education at Montgomery College, where she was particularly interested in classes in economics, speaking often of an economics professor there who added much to her understanding of the field. Mary Anne’s innate facility with numbers and mastery of details allowed her to excel in her lengthy career of over 35 years at NIST. Her loyalty to her work and her diligence in handling all of her programs earned her the Director’s Award for Excellence in Administration in 2014. As Mary Anne built her career and raised her family, she also became very active in the community of Gaithersburg. This began with her involvement with the Gaithersburg Sports Association, as her family was engaged in numerous sports. She was an active member with the West Riding Citizens Association, helping to guide the growth and development of the neighborhood where the family has lived since 1970. She also helped out with many fund-raising activities at the high school where her daughter and two sons attended. In her free time, Mary Anne enjoyed bowling with her husband and friends, and was an avid reader who loved to share books back and forth with her sisters. She was particularly interested in biographies and histories of World War II. Mary Anne also continued her love of skating as an adult, but switched over to roller skates while at NBS – on a challenge from her kids who bought her a set of skates one Christmas! And she took that challenge and turned roller skating into a lunchtime pastime. She discovered that skating offered her time to get out and enjoy the campus at her own speed, meeting people along the way, and just enjoying the nice days outside. Mary Anne was very supportive of her husband Bob’s love of sports and traveled across the country to many of his baseball and softball tournaments. These teammates became fast friends and were like an extended family. They all loved her and her spirit. Bob often commented that Mary Anne was his biggest fan and thanked her publicly and warmly for all of her support in his acceptance speech at his induction into the Maryland Softball Hall of Fame. Mary Anne was known for her can-do spirit and work ethic. Her profound love and devotion for her family was demonstrated always. She worked very hard to do what she could to ensure their happiness and well-being. If anyone needed anything, all they had to do was ask. Her generosity was unmatched. There was a comfort knowing that whatever was needed Mary Anne would do what she could to see that the need was met. Mary Anne did take time to relax. She especially enjoyed waterside weekends at Cabin Point and Chincoteague, Virginia, with her sisters, Andrea and Cindy. Mary Anne found the beautiful nature, and looking out at the water, both very calming and energizing at the same time. Mary Anne had a kind, giving, and generous soul. People who knew her commented on how kind she was. Her home was welcoming to all and was one that hosted many get-togethers for neighbors. It was also the place that the neighborhood kids gathered often. She would joke that it was like all the kids knew what day grocery day was. Mary Anne’s life was one of love and devotion to her family and friends, which ran long and deep. Her helping hand and giving spirit gave her a lot of joy. Her legacy of hard work, devotion, and generosity will live on in all that knew her.1
