     His Social Security Number was 554-15-0541.5 William Pillip Saaranzin was buried at Hills Ferry Cemetery, Newman, Stanislaus Co., California.2,4 He was born on November 15, 1963 at Gustine, Merced Co., California.1,2,3,5,4 He died on September 3, 1985 at Big Sur, Monterey Co., California, at age 21.2,3,4 He William Phillip Saaranzin of Gustine was killed last Tuesday after being crushed in an accident while working on a fire cleanup crew near Monterey. Saaranzin, 22, was killed instantly after a large root ball from an oak tree rolled over him, said the Monterey County coroner's office. Authorities said Mr. Saaranzin, who was employed as a summer worker for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, was working on a steep hillside with a chainsaw when the accident occurred. According to coroner's reports, he was working with a chainsaw cutting up trees pushed over by bulldozers on a ridge above Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in Big Sur when the accident occurred. According to coroner's deputies reports, Saaranzin was working with a crew that was cleaning up the area after a fire, when a root ball came loose, rolled down the hill and crushed him. Phillip Saaranzin was covaledictorian of his graduating class at Gustine High School, with a 4.0 grade average. He was an active member of the Gustine 4-H Club, and had many projects, including the raising of a guide dog for the blind which is still active in Merced County. He also participated in a variety of sports at GHS, including four years of basketball. He played football until being sidelined with a knee injury, and three years of varsity tennis. He was working part time as a member of the Max II, a unit comprised of college students working for the U.S. Forest Service in the summer. Services for Saaranzin were held last Friday at the Hillview Funeral Chapel. Burial followed at the Hills Ferry Cemetery in Newman. Saaranzin was a Gustine native and a graduate of Gustine High School. He was a student at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, where he was majoring in crop science. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Maxine Saaranzin of Gustine; two sisters, Becky Fontes of Menlo Park and Lynn Saaranzin of Gustine; and a grandmother, Mina Voorting of El Centro. on September 12, 1985.4

He had been an over the road truck driver, had been a Pentecostal Church member, and was an ordained Non-denominational pastor. A daughter, Serena Elkins preceded him in death in 2002. Survivors include his wife, Kimberly, daughters, Kaytee and Makayla, sons, Clayton, Kaleb, Adam, Aaron, and Freddy, and his parents, Roy and Susie Elkins of Marble. on April 30, 2006.8
