A man of great character, he served God, his country, and his family throughout his life. He served in the US Army during World War II, was a member of Oakland Baptist Church for 72 years where he served as deacon, usher, and worked with the Roanoke City Jail Ministry for 20 year. He was selected Father of the Year for Roanoke Valley in 1992, in the religious category. Estile walked in the March of Dimes Walk-America for 10 years, and was awarded the oldest walker years through 1989 to 91. His life's work was being carpenter, building dozens of homes in the Valley and donating countless hours to his church. He bowled in a seniors league until the age of 90, and will best be remembered for his great sense of humor. "Pappaw" as he was known to his family, had an incredible positive attitude, Faith, and love for people and animals. Preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 62 years, Nellie Blanche Payne Hall, his parents John and Minnie Hall; his sister and brother-in-law, Effie and Curtis Franklin; his sister and brother-in-law, Mrytle and Enos Sowder. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara H. Quinn; his daughter and cherished son-in-law, Betty H. and Don Patterson; his grandchildren, Liz Walker of Charleston, S.C., Jackie Highberger of Mrytle Beach, S.C., Michael Patterson and wife, Angie of Portland, Ore., Thom Quinn of Christiansburg, Va., Jeff Patterson and wife, Angie of Blacksburg, Va., and Jen Patterson of Troutville, Va; great-grandchildren include Jessica and Danielle Walker, Sabrina Dunkle, Jason and Joe Highberger, Autumn and Chuck Quinn, Collin Patterson and great-great grandson, Eric Dunkle; brother-in-law, Carl N. Payne and wife, Alberta of Herndon, Va; sister-in-law, Victoria Payne of Brooksville, Fla; sister-in-law, Juanita P. Overstreet of Roanoke and Ruby P. Hicks of Charlotte, N.C. and cousins, Elsie Sowder of Vinton, Louise Turman of Christiansburg, Va. and Marie Abbott of St. Petersburg, Fla. and faithful friend, Chuck Foley of Roanoke. Good Samaritan Hospice came into Estile's life the last years and brought so much comfort and care. A special Thank You to Nicole, Sue, Diane, Cassandra and Marvin for your help and kindness. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2005 at Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Kelly Damper will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Oakey's North Chapel, 362-1237. A Celebration of Mrs. Young's life will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Garden City Baptist Church with the Reverend Jay Fields officiating. Interment will follow at Franklin Memorial Park. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 1999 with the Rev. Bradley M. Griese officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at Oakey's Vinton Chapel where family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. on October 14, 1999.5
