     Jack Junior Conner Jack J. Conner, 88, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., passed away on Friday, February 5, 2016, in the VA Medical Center, Salem, Va. Jack was born in the Alleghany Springs community of Shawsville, Va., on January 9, 1928 to Harley M. and Margaret Bandy Conner. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Moneta, Va. He was a proud patriot and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Dyess DD-880. He attended Virginia Tech and held football season tickets since 1965. He was a 59-year member and Past Master of Craighill Lodge #160, Elliston, Va and a member of the Kazim Shriners. The majority of his career was in management in the petroleum trucking industry. Jack enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. Special times were spent on Smith Mountain Lake boating and skiing from sun up to sun down. e especially loved pheasant hunting trips to South Dakota with his brothers. Jack never met a stranger. He always welcomed his children’s friends to join the family activities. No matter where he went he always had fun. He was one of a kind. Jack was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers; Maurice, Raymond, Marcus, Don, and Richard and sisters-in-law, Claudine Chumley, Millie Conner and Carol Mabery. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Aldridge Conner; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Gregg Holland of Salem; son and daughter-in-law, J. Clay and Christi Conner of Georgetown, Ky; grandsons, Adam and Grayson Holland; granddaughters, Olivia and Campbell Conner; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Harriet Conner of Naples, Fl; brother-in-law and wife, Edward and Doris Mabery, Willis, Va., sisters-in-law, Betty Conner, Roanoke, and Louise Card, Phoenix, AZ. Also surviving are nephews Maury, Marcus, Stephen, Richard, Rex, Ronnie and Michael; nieces, Linda, Robin and Rhonda; many cousins and friends. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the VA Medical Center, specifically those working in the Hospice Unit on 2-3, for their excellent care and compassion. Jack’s family will receive friends Monday, February 8, 2016 from 5 – 8 PM at Oakey’s North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke. Where a service celebrating his life will be held Tuesday at 12 noon in Oakey’s Chapel with Rev. David Lord officiating. Interment Sherwood Memorial Park with full military rites. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty Conner; son, Stephen Conner and his wife, Christy, of Winston-Salem N.C; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Barbara, of Moneta, Va., and Harold and Harriet, of Naples Fla; grandsons, Neil Conner, of Virginia Beach, Va., Jesse Conner and wife, Afton, of Canton, Ga., and Ian Conner, of Colorado Springs, Colo; great-grandchildren; Annabelle and Rylee; and many nieces and nephews. Entombment will follow in the Chapel Mausoleum of Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on April 13, 2013.8
