M, b. May 6, 1845, d. February 23, 1904
John William Gunter was buried at Mount Tabor Cemetery, Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.4,3,5 He On Jun 22, 1861, Jack was enlisted as a corporal in Company C, 39th Virginia Infantry in Franktown, Virginia by Thomas Henderson. Field officers of the 39th Regiment Virginia Infantry were commissioned by the Government of Virginia on May 28, 1861 and the regiment was subsequently mustered into the service of the Confederate States with eleven companies, A to L, two of which acted a cavalry and one as artillery. In the Company Muster Roll for Dec 31, 1861 to Feb 3, 1862, Jack was listed as absent and as taken prisoner. The company was disbanded and mustered out of service on Jan 25, 1862. He enlisted as a private on Mar 6, 1862 in Captain Kyle's Company, Virginia Heavy Infantry in Appomattox County by Captain Robert R. Kyle. Captain Kyle's Company was organized in March 1862 from a portion of the 174 Regiment of the Virginia Militia. It was disbanded in June 1862 and the men were assigned to Companies A and D, 19th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery and Company B, 20th Battalion Virginia Heavy Artillery. Jack was assigned to Company B, 20th Battalion. Company B later became Company I, 38th Virginia Infantry (Pittsylvania Regiment). The company muster dated Feb 25, 1865 shows that Jack was absent without leave since Feb 8, 1865. Jack's name appears on a roll of Prisoners of War, belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia, who have been surrendered by General Robert E. Lee to Lieutenant General U.S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Jack was listed in a roll of enlisted men of different commands belonging to the Army of Northern Virginia who were not present with their commands for parole, and afterwards taken up by Captain F.C. Cox, A.A.G. of the Cavalry Corps of A. N. Virginia to be paroled according to the terms of surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia Apr 9, 1865 by order of the Major General Fitz Lee, C.S.A.2 He was born on May 6, 1845 at Patrick Co., Virginia.6,3,5,1,7 He married Ruhama Ann DeWeese, daughter of Patterson DeWeese and Sarah C.
