Census Records

1850Dwelling 779, Nelson Co., VirginiaGabriella was enumerated with her brother-in-law Samuel Goings as head of household. Rozier Dedwylder made a study of the personal property tax records of Amherst County and found that James Going, Sr. and James Going, Jr. were list on the 1850 tax rolls. Only James Going, Sr. appeared in 1851. It is suggested that by Cubert Thomas Wood of Columbia, Tennessee that James W. Going died during 1850 and that his brother, Samuel Going, assumed his family. The household of Samuel Going and Gabriella Skinner Going were enumerated in the 1850 census of Nelson County, adjacent to that of his father. Samuel Going is regarded as the brother-in-law of Gabriella Skinner Going by Rozier Dedwylder. Perhaps Samuel and James are really the same person.7

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until his memorial service begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 25 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Jimmy was the sixth of seven children of the marriage of Howard C. and Mada C. Nichols of Roanoke, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Air Force Major Howard Berkley Nichols of Aberdeen, MS; sisters, Francis N. [Ralph] Lucado of Largo, FL and Betty N. [E.V] Gillespie and brother, Howard [Betty] Berkley Nichols of Roanoke, VA. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Nancy; two sons, James Russell Nichols Jr. of Memphis, TN and Timothy W. [Tracy] Nichols of Ripley, TN; grandsons, Cole and Tyler Nichols of Chattanooga, TN and Jacob Nichols of Chattanooga, TN; granddaughters, Ashlee Nichols of Lebanon, TN and Shelby Nichols of Ashville, NC; sisters, Barbara N. [Charles] Hines of Atlanta, GA and Peggy N. [Robert] McCormick of Roanoke, VA; and brother, Irvin Dosser [Ernestine] Nichols of New Castle, VA. Jimmy grew up in Roanoke, VA and was educated in the Roanoke city school system. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1955. His higher education began at Roanoke College in Salem, VA, while under a track scholarship, in pre-engineering. He continued on to Blacksburg, VA where he received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1960. Jimmy loved sports and played fast pitch softball and coached baseball and football in his earlier life. In later life he played golf at as often as he could. Jimmy began his employment career with the Boeing Co. in Seattle,WA and Kimball Neb and then to Huntsville, AL working on the Nasa Apollo Mission Projects, which he loved. Jimmy then worked for the U.S Postal Service in Memphis, TN until his retirement in 2001. A special note from his granddaughter, Shelby Nichols --- In honor of the patriarch of our family, and the most intelligent man I've ever known... I wanted to take a moment to mention his life's work. Back in the day, my grandfather traveled around the nation installing minutemen missiles in the ground. He also wrote the engineering manuals for NASA, specifically for the Apollo 11 rocket mission to the moon (the rover included). The way I understand it, he laid the groundwork for developing control system strategies that they still reference today. on February 22, 2017.6

"Irv" was born to Howard and Mada Conner Nichols in Roanoke City on September 28, 1939. He would later graduate as a member of the Jefferson High School Class of 1957. Following High School, he entered the world of VPI and forever became a Hokie, graduating in the Class of 1960 with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. This degree would lead him to be an engineer for Dominion Power. Post retirement, Irv and his wife "Ernie" found a piece of paradise near his beloved VPI, in Craig County, where he could truly be an outdoorsman (hunting, fishing), traveling to the beach, and going to watch the Hokies play whether football, baseball or basketball. He was also a member of the body of faith at Newport-Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. Irv was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Mada; and siblings, Frances Lucado, Howard Nichols, Betty Gillespie, and Jimmy Nichols. Left to cherish his memory to their hearts are his wife and best companion, "Ernie" Mathias Nichols who was married to him on July 7, 1999; children, Howard Cleveland Nichols of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Christopher Dosser Nichols of Roanoke, Va; Pam Venable (Billy) of Kernersville, N.C., and George Fisher of Richmond, Va; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Barbara Hines, and Peggy McCormick. Irv's family invite all to come and celebrate this wonderful life given to us all in the Spring, beneath a shade tree at the Nichols house, with Pastor Morris Fleischer officiating, a tale of Irv told, and perhaps a song or two as all gather in a spirit of love and community. on January 9, 2022.6
