M, b. February 5, 1916, d. October 6, 1998
Clarence Melvin "Soddy" Groat was buried at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia.3 His Social Security Number was 134-03-5146.5 He was born on February 5, 1916 at Brantford, Ontario, Canada.5,3 He married Sarah Pauline Prillaman, daughter of Mawyer Prillaman and Ocie May Guthrie, circa 1947.1,3,4 Clarence Melvin "Soddy" Groat died on October 6, 1998 at Newport News, Virginia, at age 82.5,2 He NEWPORT NEWS — Clarence "Soddy" M. Groat, a member of the Newport News Baby Dodgers professional baseball team after World War II, died Tuesday. He was 82. Mr. Groat had played semi-professional baseball, football and basketball. His first professional experience as a regular was with the Rochester Iroquois lacrosse team from 1937 to 1941. "Football was his first love, though he played professional baseball,'' said his son, Gil Groat. Soddy's first paying job in baseball was with the Boston Braves. He was shipped to their farm club in Leesburg, Fla., in 1938. He hit .289 and helped his club to the league pennant. In 1940 he went to a Cincinnati farm team before going into the Brooklyn Dodgers chain at Montreal. World War II interrupted his sports career and threatened to end it as he served from 1942 through 1946 serving in the infantry in Europe. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Silver Heart and the Bronze Star. He was blinded for 45 days but recovered in time to get part of the 1946 season in Montreal. Soddy, a centerfielder, was then shipped to Newport News to play with the Baby Dodgers. He played there again in 1947 with such teammates as Chuck Connors and Gil Hodges. Hodges was his roommate and namesake for Soddy's son. Soddy took up full-time Peninsula residency in 1951. From then to 1970 he was a restaurateur who owned both the Knotty Pine and the Cross Roads Inn, located near Fort Eustis and Interstate 64. He then began coaching youth programs and directed Peninsula Catholic to a championship in baseball. Soddy was chosen coach of the year in 1976 in the Tidewater Independent School Conference. "On of my dad's most memorable accomplishment for himself was when he was stationed in the Army at Fort Lee. His Army team played against the New York Giants, and he had a 74-yard touchdown. The Army went on to win the championship that year," said Groat. Soddy was a full-blooded Mohawk Indian born Feb. 5, 1916, on the Brantford Ontario, Canada, reservation, one of 13 children. His family moved to Buffalo, N.Y., in 1923, and he was active in sports at Riverside High School, where he graduated from in 1935. He had several college scholarship offers but turned them down in favor of turning professional. Soddy was a former member of the Merrimac Club, the Warwick Yacht and Country Club, the Lafayette Yacht Club and the former White Hall Club of Newport News. Less than 10 years ago, he was inducted to the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. "My father was very quick to smile and never met an enemy. What I admire most about him was that he was always very calm. He taught us the importance of family," said Groat. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Pauline Prillaman Groat, and his son, Gil David Groat, both of Newport News; two sisters, Anne Jones and Leone Shotwell, both of Buffalo, N.Y; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Micki Vanderbilt and Father Peter Tran of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. on October 8, 1998.3

Austin Clark Lowry was born on March 23, 1928 at Oswego, Oswego Co., New York.2,3,4 He married Suzanne Prillaman, daughter of Henry Alfred Prillaman and Lucy Doris Littlepage, on July 8, 1961 at Essex Co., Virginia.1,2,4 Austin Clark Lowry died on November 15, 2020 at Holmes Beach, Manatee Co., Florida, at age 92.4 He Austin Clark Lowry, 92 of Holmes Beach, FL passed away at home November 15. Born March 23, 1928 in Owego, NY to Donaldson R. Lowry and Emily Clark Lowry, he served in the US Marine Corps at the end of World War II, was a graduate of the Owego Free Academy, held an undergraduate degree from St Bonaventure University, and a masters from Cornell University. Austin spent his career at Cornell University: 1952-1963 in the Agronomy Department and 1965-1986 in the Department of Agriculture Economics (now The School of Applied Economics and Management) as the extension associate responsible for the Cornell Agricultural Management Information System (CAMIS). He retired in 1986. He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Charlotte McClintock (William), brothers, Donaldson R. Lowry, Jr (Thelma), and Robert C. Lowry. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne P. Lowry of Ithaca, NY and Holmes Beach, FL; son, Brian R. Lowry (Carlyn Carey) of Dennisport, MA; daughter, Heather Cundey (John Bartlett) of Short Hills, NJ; grandchildren, Alison Cundey, Nicholas Cundey and Phebe Carey Lowry; and several nieces and nephews. After Austin received his undergraduate degree, he moved to Ithaca, NY and began his 34-year career at Cornell University where in 1960 he met Virginia transplant Suzanne Prillaman - a Cornell graduate student at the time. They married in 1961 and settled in Ithaca's Ellis Hollow where they raised their two children and made many life-long friends. Becoming a first time parent at almost 40, Austin was an extremely loving and dedicated father, who always showed great interest and pride in his children's lives. He was a faithful hockey dad and spent many cold Ithaca winters at his son's pre-dawn practices and games. His children were also rewarded by his vast knowledge, and his vivid story telling which included many accounts of his time during WWII. An avid squash player, he competed against young Cornell students well into his 60s. He began running in his late 50s and took his daughter on her first run at 15 years old which encouraged her life-long love of the sport. He spent many happy retirement years on Anna Maria Island where he joined and acquired many dear friends with the early morning beach walkers, and had many rewarding years as a volunteer with Bradenton Tidewell Hospice, and with 'Friends of Bill' whose friendship and patience made his late life not only possible, but productive and very happy. Diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer exactly 4 weeks prior to the date of his death, he spent those final weeks surrounded by family and friends, and enjoyed receiving cards and calls from many more. He said more than once during this time that he was the luckiest man in the world to be surrounded by so much love. Autin’s family is so grateful for that support and for the extremely kind and knowledgeable care from Tidewell Hospice. He and his family are especially grateful to caregiver Veronica Betancur for the incredible love and support she gave him in his final 5 years of life. Austin will be remembered for his kindness, genuine interest in others, humor, intelligence, generosity, and disinterest in the material world. on November 18, 2020.4
