After graduating from West Virginia Institute of Technology with a mining engineering degree, Gene Shockey dedicated his life to coal mining. For the next 50 years, Gene was an innovator for the coal industry. He was responsible for the installation of the five 1000-foot longwall, and also he created safer mining environments by developing a methane gas gathering system. He was recognized for his accomplishments and contributions to the coal industry with an honorary doctorate degree from Penn State University. Gene was an inspiration to all those who knew him. He was vice president of Virginia, Pocahontas Division, Island Creek Coal Co., Oakwood. He served as president of Virginia Coal Association. He was president of Emery Mining Corp., Huntington, Utah, vice president of Kitt Energy Corp., a subsidiary of Standard Oil of Ohio, Eastern Region, Pittsburgh, senior vice president of Jim Walters Resources, Brookwood, Ala., and vice president and assistant to the president of Consolidation Coal Co., Consol Plaza, Pittsburgh. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery with the Rev. Aulbert Roberts officiating. In addition to his wife, Mr. Shockey is survived by one son, Thomas Jr. and Charlotte Shockey, of Bridgeport; a daughter-in-law, Kim Shockey, of Brewster, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Jon Jr., Jared and Jacob Shockey, of Brewster, Ohio. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a son, Jon M. Shockey; and two brothers, Gene and Jack Shockey. Tom passionately showered his love to his church, family and many friends. An active member of the Owings Community Church, he served as both Sunday School teacher and as a trustee. In addition to his many works within the church, Tom was instrumental in establishing the “Through His Hands” benevolent outreach program, which touched many lives in the Shinnston area. Mr. Shockey was an avid outdoorsman, loved working on cars and finding projects to tinker around with. Tom worked as a truck driver and coal miner for many years. A memorial service celebrating Tom’s life will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at the Owings Community Church, with Pastor Ron Johnson presiding. A fellowship dinner will follow at the church. Born May 17, 1883, at Ingram in Fayette County, she was a daughter of the late James and Lucinda Canterbury Kincaid. She was a member of the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband, Charles M. of Beckley; one daughter, Mrs. Hugh Burdette of Beckley; one sister, Mrs. R. H. Grant of Beckley; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren. The body is at the funeral home where friends may call after 4 p.m. today. on May 30, 1966.¹

Surviving: son, Ralph Jennings of Hinton; daughter, Deborah Bibb of Oak Hill; stepdaughter, Clara Crities of Ohio; sisters, Ida Martin of Oak Hill, Savannah Thore of California, Viola Smith of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandcildren; one great-great-grandchild. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Treadway Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Menefee officiating. Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, is in charge of arrangements.
