Lester Sr., 67, began his business career as a traveling salesman for Johnson & Johnson and eventually headed an employment agency and two medical marketing firms. The funeral for Mr. Lester, who died of cancer Friday at his Marietta residence, will be at 2 p.m. today at Sandy Springs Chapel Funeral Directors. He founded Pate & Lester, a Marietta-based medical marketing firm, in 1984 with Orlando businessman Harold Pate. The company, which employs seven people, sells medical supplies to hospitals in seven Southeastern states. Mr. Pate grew up on his father's dairy farm in Christiansburg, Va., and earned a marketing degree from Georgia Tech in 1953. He served in the Army at Fort Hood in Texas during the Korean War, then returned to Atlanta to work as a sales representative for Johnson & Johnson, said his son, Lamar Lester Jr. of Acworth. "He was one of the original salespeople in the ortho-diagnostics division, selling serology-related products," he said. "It was then a start-up division." Mr. Lester moved to Savannah in 1969 after buying an employment agency from businessman and Republican gubernatorial candidate Guy Millner, said Mr. Lester's son. He sold the company, Southeastern Personnel, in 1972 to buy Kimrob Inc., a medical marketing firm. Kimrob evolved into Pate & Lester. Mr. Lester, who moved from Savannah to Marietta in 1993, oversaw day-to-day operations at Pate & Lester until the time of his death, said his son, now a partner in the firm. He found out he had cancer 18 months ago. Mr. Lester was an avid reader, bridge player and saltwater fisherman, his son said. He was known for his sense of humor and his devotion to his grandchildren. He was a member of Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church. Survivors other than his son include his former wife, Irene Lester of Savannah; a daughter, Laura Simpson of Atlanta; another son, William Edward Lester of Atlanta; and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 135 Bradford Square, Suite B, Fayetteville, GA 30215. on July 27, 1998.8
