He was a gadget builder who loved to tinker and create mechanical things including concrete washing machines, trailers and conveyor belts. Mr. Crawford enjoyed taking kids to the river and lake and letting them experience the joy of house boating, being on the water, water skiing and fellowship. He loved a good practical joke. Mr. Crawford is survived by two sons, James Lee Crawford and wife, Wanda of Covington and Steven M. Crawford and wife Elizabeth of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Lisa Akers and husband, Jason, Cindy L. Crawford of Vinton, Diana K. Crawford and Jessica Marie Crawford, both of Roanoke; two great-grandsons, Austin Matthew Akers and Samuel Andrew Akers; a brother, Richard Crawford and wife, Sarah of Roanoke, a sister, Mildred C. Smith of Covington; and a sister-in-law, Peggy Crawford of Covington. In addition to his wife, Mary, Mr. Crawford was preceded in death by two brothers, Toni Crawford and Kenneth Crawford; and one sister, Gladys C. Howard. Pallbearers will be Mike Dabbs, Dave Fitzgerald, Chester Swartz, Roy Carter, Paul Howard, and Pat Loving. A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday at Alleghany Memorial Park with the Rev. Roger Bush officiating. Graveside rites will be conducted by the Curtis A. Smith Post 1033 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Loving Funeral Home.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Kenneth and Clinton; one sister, Gladys Howard. Survivors include his wife, Sarah Childs; one sister, Mildred Smith of Covington; two daughters, Andrea Hardiman and husband, Wil of Buffalo, Mo., Shelby Gibson and husband, Hugh "Buzzy" Gibson of Paquoson; daughter, Rebecca Terry and husband, Wilson Terry of Kingsport, Tenn. and Roanoke; son, Pete Clark and wife, Jenny of Mt. Airy, Md; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; lots of nieces, nephews and lots of wonderful friends. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Roanoke which he loved to work with his church family and Trinity Thrift Shop along with his wife. His wonderful Pastor was always close as a phone call, The Rev. Dr. Kenneth P. Lane, Jr. Richards last three years were spent at Virginia Veterans Care Center where he was well loved and taken good care of. His hobbies were working with Special Olympics area XVIII in Covington, 610 Covington Moose Lodge, Roanoke Moose Lodge 284, camping, traveling in his motorhome, taking trips on his Harley motorcycle with his soulmate, Sarah. He has gone to Heaven where the streets are made of Gold, and he will be able to ride his Harley that he so loved. The family requests no flowers and to make donations to Helping Hands Trinity Church, 4040 Williamson Rd., NW, Roanoke, Va. 24012. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2006, 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4040 Williamson Rd., NW, Roanoke. Visitation with the family will be held after the service. on March 23, 2006.8
