Dead are Judy and Joyce Frederick, 6-year-old twins, and their brothers, James 11, and Dennis, 8. They and four other children and their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Frederick, were asleep when the fire broke out about 1:15 a.m. Kenneth, 17, and Michael, 15, jumped to safety from an upstairs room. The other young sters, Sue Ellen, 9, and Tom, 12, also escaped. Michael may have seriously injured his left foot when he jumped. The leg already had been in a cast as a result of a power mower accident. The youth's crutch was burned in the fire. Deputy Sheriff Waynt Eaken and Charles Madden, chief coroner's Investigator, called the fire one of the worst tragedies they had ever seen. Bodies of the four children were burned beyond recognition, they said. The fire apparently started la the twins' downstairs bedroom although the cause has not been determined. Sue Ellen, who slept down stairs, discovered the fire and awakened her parents but was unable to rouse the twins. She was born in Newark, Wet Virginia May 8, 1924, a daughter of Mrs. Nellie B. Taylor Fought of Akron, Ohio, and the late Okey W. Fought. After graduating from Wirt County High School in 1942, she moved to Akron with her parents. She was employed as an office clerk at East Motor Freight there before her marriage to Stephen L. Beban on February 14, 1947. The couple moved first to New Haven, Mich., then to Mount Clemens, Mich., in 1951, where Mr. Beban has served for several years as a school principal. Ann was a member of St. Thecla Catholic Church, Mount Clemens. Surviving are her husband, Stephen, and three children: Stephen L., Jr., Jennifer Ann and Terri Elizabeth, all living at home. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. Nellie B. Fought of Akron, Oho, a sister, Mrs. Marie Frederick of Florida and her grandfather, Clinton M. Taylor of West Virginia. While Mr, and Mrs. Kenneth E. Frederick and their remaining four children are residing for the present in the homes of relatives in Barberton and Akron, donations of furniture, clothing, and food are being brought to the Manchester fire station to rehabilitate the family. Commitment services for the four victims of the fire, who were trapped in their bedrooms when flames enveloped their cement block home, are scheduled for 2 p.m. today in the Manchester cemetery. The Rev, A. C. Reed, pastor of the Manchester Church of Christ, will officiate at the services for James, 11, Dennis, 8 and Joyce and Judy, twins who would have been six years old next month. Fire Chief H. B. Harget of the Manchester fire department which extinguished the blaze with the aid of the Clinton fire department said today that the cause of the blaze is still undetermined and that he is continuing his investigation. Michael Frederick, 15, one of the survivors of the fire was taken Thursday to the Orrville Osteopathic hospital where it was determined that his foot was not re-fractured when he jumped to safety from his bedroom on the second floor of the burning house. However, the cast which had been placed on the foot several weeks ago when the boy caught his foot in a power mower had been cracked and it was necessary to replace it with another. The other surviving children, Kenneth, who was 17 today, Thomas, 12, and Sue Ellen, 9, were not injured. Frederick suffered a burn on his right hand in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue the fire victims. His wife, Marie, also was not injured. Members of Paul Harget post, American Legion, will canvass the remainder of the Manchester community this evening for contributions to the home building fund and will contact residents in the surrounding areas over the weekend. Some of the money will be used to help secure a lot on which the home will be built. A number of bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers and other tradesmen in the Manchester area have indicated they will volunteer their services in constructing the new residence for the family. Legionnaires having trucks will collect donations of furniture Saturday. A number of items of furniture have been brought to the fire station but those having donations to be called for at their homes are asked to call Harold Schuler, commander of the post at TU 2-3317. Included among the furniture donated to the family are several new bedroom suites by the Borden Milk Co. of Akron where Frederick is employed as an engineer. The Sear Rubber Co. of Akron, where Frederick works several evenings each week as a side job, has contributed a check for $50, $25 for groceries and complete wardrobes for the survivors of the tragedy. "The furniture donations will be stored in a vacant house on the property of Frederick's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Frederick of Barberton where some members of the family are living at the present time. The house, as well as a completely furnished house in Manchester have been offered to the family for temporary use. However, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick have not made any future plans. The legion post plans to hold an auction of articles of furniture which are duplicated or not needed and to present the proceeds to the Frederick family for other needs. The Akron chapter of the Red Cross has provided clothing for the family.
