He was born and raised in Detroit, MI, by Morton Valentine Engelman and Gladys Vivian Holt along with his brothers John and William and his sisters, Mary, Vivian and Norma. He graduated from St. Leo's High School in 1942. He recently celebrated 54 years of marriage to Lucille Theresa Theisen Engleman, his true love and best friend. Together they raised seven children; Michael, Thomas, Robert, Daniel, Peter, Jane and Stephen. Joseph and Lucille's children have given them fourteen grandchildren. During World War II, he served as a staff sergeant with Company A, 328th Infantry Regiment, 26th Yankee Division. As a rifleman, he participated in the northern France and Rhineland campaigns of the 3rd Army under George Patton. He received the American Theatre Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal and three Overseas Bars. He attended Boston College briefly upon his return and received his honorable discharge March 25, 1946. Following his discharge from the Army, he attended and graduated from the University of Detroit with a bachelor's degree in chemistry in 1948 and the designation of doctor of dental surgery in 1953. He practiced dentistry for 10 years in Whitmore Lake, MI. In 1963, he moved to St. Louis to attend Washington University School of Dental Medicine. Upon graduating with a master's degree in orthodontics, he moved to Columbia and opened his orthodontic practice. For almost 40 years he treated individuals from all over Missouri as well as neighboring states. In addition to his practice, Dr. Engelman taught at Washington University School of Dental Medicine and at the University of Missouri-Columbia and was a staff member at Boone County Hospital. He was especially proud and honored to work at the Orofacial and Cleft Palate Clinic within the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Department of Surgery at University Hospital and Clinics. It gave him much joy to use his skills to benefit others in need. Dr. Engelman was a member of many professional societies, including the American Dental Association, American Association of Orthodontics, Midwestern Society of Orthodontics, Central District MSO, Columbia Dental Society, Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation, Washington University Orthodontic Study Group, the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He served on the Missouri Dental Board and is also a past president. He published many articles in dental journals and presented at many dental conferences. He held a patent on a miniature "cleft palate impression tray" used to assist in treating cleft palates in very small children. He is one of only a few thousand practitioners to receive the designation of "Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics." The organizations that he participated in constantly commended his unflagging support. Additionally, he found time to participate in the local Kiwanis Club, Sunrise Optimists and Knights of Columbus. He attended Mass at the Newman Center and Veteran's Administration Hospital Chapel and often helped his fellow veterans travel from their rooms to the chapel to attend Mass. He tirelessly followed the Missouri Tigers basketball and football teams and the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. "The Doctor," as he was fondly referred to by his children, was a devoted father and family man who was always on hand to help his large family. He was truly interested in his children's welfare and tirelessly volunteered at the many schools his children attended through the years. He was a 4-H instructor with the Harg Hustlers 4-H Club and an AAU swimming official in conjunction with the Columbia Swim Team. "The Doctor" was an accomplished painter and sculptor who created for his own satisfaction. He loved classical music. He possessed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. The dictionary, encyclopedia, and other books of reference were his constant dining companions. He insisted on looking up facts as opposed to relying on conjecture. He encouraged much creativity that remains with his posterity. "The Doctor" maintained a large garden and was particularly fond of his tomatoes, inspiring those around him to share his affection for plants and gardening. He taught us all that there are only two things you can't buy, good love and good tomatoes. A conservationist before it was fashionable, he left the world a much greener place than he found it. Perhaps most of all, he loved to tell a good joke and hear a good joke. He will be remembered fondly doubled over laughing at the dining room table, with tears running down his face. He was a wonderful father and husband. Joseph, thank you for helping us all the way. Be nice and be careful. God bless you, and thank you. Graveside services are Sept. 9, at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville. on September 6, 2005.5
