Jean Maynard Gray, son of James Maynard Abner Howard Gray and Margaret Alice Elizabeth Arlington "Arlie" Rumburg.1 Helen Maranda Denson was born on July 9, 1910 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,4 She died on March 12, 2005 at Richmond, Virginia, at age 94.4,1 She Helen Maranda Denson Gray, 94, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Roanoke, died March 12, 2005 in Richmond, Virginia. Helen was born July 9, 1910 in Roanoke, Virginia, the daughter of Bessie Tinsley Denson, and Thomas Lee Denson. She was raised in Roanoke, Virginia. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1928. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Jean M. Gray of Roanoke and Newport News; and by two brothers, Ira T. Denson and Charles L. Denson, both of Roanoke. Her husband was a U.S. Army Officer who served in World War II and the Korean War. They lived at various military bases in the United States and in Japan. In 1952, they moved to Newport News, Virginia. She lived in Newport News, Virginia from 1952 until 2003. She moved to Richmond in 2003 to be near her daughter. Helen is survived by two sons and a daughter, Jan M. Gray of Newport News, Virginia, T. Wayne Gray of Burke, Virginia, and Sara Gray Bateman, of Richmond, Virginia. Nine grandchildren. She shared the love of playing bridge, making cakes and holiday decorations, hooking rugs, and participating in wives' club activities at Fort Eustis, Virginia. She was a member of the Bethel Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy in Newport News. She was also fortunate to travel much of the world including Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. on March 15, 2005.1

Garland Monroe Gray, beloved brother, 73, of Salem, Va., passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Sunday, October 31, 2021, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland Madison and Marie Saul Gray; brother, Melvin, and infant sister, Velma. He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlene and Bill Yeagley and Janice and Tom Scarce; as well as several cousins. Garland was raised in Roanoke and moved to Salem in 2011. He retired from Roanoke City and Salem City School. Garland loved plants and flowers and was well known in the garden shops of businesses in the Roanoke Valley. Garland got the green thumb in the family and his yard and porches were always filled with beautiful flowers. A lover of all animals, he especially loved his cats and was known to set scraps out for the area critters. He enjoyed meeting with friends at Hardee's in Salem, where he had many of his plants in the dining area. His favorite music was from the 1950's & 60's and he could always tell you who sang which song and its history on the music charts. Garland also enjoyed watching westerns and Hallmark movies on television, especially Christmas movies. He loved to decorate for the various seasons and always had lights in the trees of his yard to celebrate holidays and special occasions. Garland was a devout Christian and loved his church family at Fellowship Baptist Church, of which he was a member and attended for over 50 years. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 3, 2021, from 6 until 8 p.m. at John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem. A service will follow on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Manning officiating. Interment immediately following at Evergreen Burial Park. Garland was very special to many people and will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank everyone involved in caring and praying for Garland in his final months, especially Good Samaritan Hospice, Fellowship Baptist Church, special caregiver, Tanya Terry, and all the friends who visited and brought milkshakes and sent cards to Garland. on November 2, 2021.2

Janice Odell Gray was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.7 She Janice Odell Gray Scarce, Mar 22, 1955 - Aug 2, 2025. Janice Gray Scarce, 70, of Salem, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 2, 2025, after a 3 ½ year battle with ovarian cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Garland Gray and Marie Gray; brothers, Garland Monroe Gray and Melvin Gray, and infant sister Velma Gray. Janice is survived by her wonderful husband, Thomas “Tom” Edward Scarce. They have been together for 42 years and have enjoyed a loving life together. Also surviving is her sister, Charlene Gray Yeagley, and brother-in-law, William “Bill” Yeagley, as well as several cousins and their families. Janice was a graduate of Jefferson High School, class of 1973, being top steno in her class. During the years Janice worked at the BBB, and then worked for Health & Human Services, before settling into her 31-year career with the U.S. Postal Service, working in Personnel. She retired in 2012 to enjoy some leisure time doing things she enjoyed. Janice had a big heart and loved animals and gave many rescues (Pepper, Cassie, Taffy, Haley, and Newt) a wonderful home over the years, along with cats, Prissie, Missy, and Kasey. Her current fur baby is Ellie, her little love bug. She also loved Jeopardy and watching Hallmark movies. One of her favorite hobbies was going to estate sales with her sister, Charlene, and she filled her home with the many beautiful bargains that she found at these sales. Janice was the rock in the family, always reminding the family of birthdays, anniversaries, etc. She gave 100% to her work and anything she was involved with, and she will be sorely missed. The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to Carilion Oncology, Carilion Palliative Care, Carilion Home Health, and Good Samaritan Hospice Services for their kindness and wonderful care. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sioux City, with the Rev. Alva Hohl officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Leo was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Caddou, Colo., the son of William Delton and Marilla Adeline (Dillon) Shanahan. Leo moved to Remsen, Iowa, in 1948, and began a 45-year career with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a repair person. He was transferred to Sioux City in 1952 and continued serving the area until his retirement. He was united in marriage with Mary Jane VanHouten on Aug. 28, 1999. Leo was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ. Leo enjoyed playing and listening to country music, woodworking, gardening, crocheting, wildlife and was a very creative artist. He was a non-stop jokester, who had a wonderful sense of humor at all times. He also worked at building his own home for his family to enjoy. Leo was a die hard fan of the Duke Blue Devils basketball team. Leo will be missed by his family which includes his wife, Mary Jane of Sioux City; his sons, Kirk Leo of Aiken, S.C., and Jeff Lynn of Tulsa, Okla; his daughters, Sheila Joan Shanahan of Santa Ana, Calif., and Gina Marie Wolf (Chad) of Salinas, Calif. He is also survived by his stepsons, Steven Bumsted of South Sioux City, Daniel Bumsted of Sergeant Bluff, Mark Bumsted (Diane) of Anthon, Iowa, Scott Bumsted (Tracy) of Huntington Beach Calif; a stepdaughter, Marcy Peterson (Erik) of Sioux City; three brothers, Ralph of Sedalia, Mo., Kenneth of Rogersville, Mo., and Raymond of Englewood, Colo; four grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; and seven great-stepgrandchildren. Leo was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert, Melvin; sister, Velma; and sister-in-law, Ruby. on December 29, 2010.2
