Hale Jr; a sister, Mary Lee Hudgins; and two brothers, Edward Coles West and John D. West. Ann is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, William J. and Betty West, of Penhook; a son, Matt Corbett, of Sunbury, Pa; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Karen Corbett, of Ararat; sisters-in-law, Peggy Thomas and Barbara West; grandchildren, Jacqueline Corbett, Erica Cipko, Alex Cipko, and Marshall Corbett; and wonderful friends, Jo Burnette, Martha "Mott" Martin, Betty Nester, Carol Lawson, Jean Wheby, Linda King, Cindy Salyer, Barbara Spangler, and Erlene Handy. After graduating as valedictorian of her class at Stuart High School, Ann earned a diploma in nursing at the University of Virginia. As a registered nurse, she embodied care and professionalism at R.J. Reynolds- Patrick County Memorial Hospital in Stuart. After retirement, her interests included the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia, a number of charities, and, notably, the game of golf. An abiding passion game of golf, and he served as a club pro in California and at Great Oaks Country Club in Floyd. He mentored a number of young golfers who became outstanding players. He had a wide-ranging curiosity about life, and read voraciously. Horses, dogs, and animals in general always had a trainer and friend in Roy Hale. on September 22, 2009.2

He also was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee West Hudgins, his stepmother, Olive Ellett Hinton Hudgins; a sister, Ruby Lee Ashing; and a brother, Lester Hudgins. Hudgins graduated from Virginia Tech and worked for the state Health Department as a sanitarian. He belonged to the Stuart Lions Club, the Rotary and Floyd Country Club. He held a lifetime membership in the Patrick County Jaycees, and he belonged to the Stuart United Methodist Church. Hudgins also had served in the Navy. Surviving are five sons, Lee W. Hudgins and R.B. Hudgins III, both of Stuart, Doug Elder of Forest, John Elder of Fairfax and Robert Elder of Tampa, Fla; and six grandchildren. West, retired head of the biochemistry department at the then-University of Oregon Medical School (now Oregon Health Sciences University) and cc-founder of the Oregon Primate Center, died Tuesday in a Portland hospital. He was 88. Interment in Finley Sunset Hills Cemetery. A native of Stuart, Va., Dr. West received his undergraduate degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1917. He was awarded a master's degree by Kansas State College in 1920 and received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1923. He served on the faculties of Kansas State College, the University of Chicago and at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis before coming to Portland as professor and head of the medical school's biochemistry department in 1934. He wrote the textbook, "Biophysical Chemistry for Medical Students," and was co-author of "Textbook of Biochemistry." In addition to his other duties at the medical school, he was for many years head of the admission committee. He also was co-founder of the Oregon Primate Center, which opened in 1962 and was Senior scientist and head of the center's biochemistry department from 1960 to 1966. From 1964 to 1969, he served as assistant to the director. He was actively involved in promoting the center's summer scholarship program for outstanding high school students. He received an honorary doctorate from Randolph-Macon College and was a member of the advisory council of the life Insurance Medical Research fund. He served for many years as chairman of the biochemistry test committee of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Survivors include his wife, Muriel of Aloha. on January 4, 1984.5

He was born August 7, 1946 to Jack and Mary Lee Elder Hudgins in Rochester NY. John was a graduate of Stuart High School and Virginia Tech. Surviving is one very dear daughter, Jennifer Elder of Clearwater, Florida, brothers Doug Elder of Forest, VA, Robert Elder of Lake Norman, NC and Lee Hudgins of Roanoke, VA. In addition to the parents, he was preceded in death by one brother R.B. ( Boaty) Hudgins of Stuart, Va. John had a successful career in sales and as a Sales Manager both in the copier and in the plastics industry. He enjoyed golfing and any activity involving his beloved daughter, that meant the world to him.2 He was born on August 7, 1946 at Rochester, Monroe Co., New York.2 He died on November 12, 2022 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 76.2
