     Dr. Arumugum Sivan Pillai LaVale, MD - Arumugham Sivan Pillai, MD, 78, died on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Dr. Pillai was born to Arumughom and Chenbagam Pillay on January 12, 1936, in Nagercoil, India. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Devi Natarajan, and brother, A.S. Pillai. After finishing high school at an early age, Dr. Pillai attended Scott Christian College in Nagercoil, India, and received a B.S. in Chemistry. He was one of two students from the Nagercoil district selected to attend Trivandrum Medical College in Kerala, India, where he earned his medical degree in 1959. After a one-year internship at Trivandrum Medical College Hospital, he spent two years studying general surgery and one year as a resident surgeon at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi from 1960 to 1963. In 1963, Dr. Pillai moved to the United States for a two-year residency in general surgery at Lakewood Hospital in Ohio. He continued his residency at C&O Hospital in Clifton Forge, Virginia, from 1965 to 1967. In 1968, he completed a cancer surgery residency at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York. In 1969, he completed residency in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at North Carolina Baptist Hospital through the Bowman Gray Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Pillai moved to Cumberland and partnered with Dr. Calvin Hadidian in 1971. He became board certified in both general surgery and thoracic and cardiac surgery in May of 1972. In 1976, he moved his office to 915 Seton Drive, Cumberland, where he practiced until his retirement in 2010. Dr. Pillai served the Western Maryland community for 39 years. He belonged to the American College of Surgeons, MED CHI (Maryland State Medical Society), the American Medical Society, and the Allegany County Medical Society. He was revered by his colleagues for both his competence as a surgeon and his compassionate bedside manner, and his patients appreciated his tenderness and empathy. He enjoyed traveling, skiing, tennis, dancing, and deep sea fishing. Most important in Dr. Pillai's life was his family. He was a loving husband and a wonderful father, and his boundless support for his wife, children, and grandchildren will be remembered and cherished. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Janice. They celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on April 14th, just two weeks before his passing. He also leaves behind Nalini Devi Casey and husband RJ Casey of Florida, S. Ramani Pillai and wife Kimberly Foley-Pillai of Frostburg, Shawn S. Pillai of LaVale, Shanti N. Pillai of Pittsburgh, and his close nephew, Kannan Natarajan, and wife Geraldine of Rockville, Maryland. Most dear to him were his grandchildren: Chloe and Eliza Robinson, Ruby and Darby Casey, Jacqueline Pillai, and Nolan Pillai. Also surviving is brother Thanu Pillay and wife Beaulah of California, brother Rama Chandran and wife Lakshmi of Colorado, sister Rugmoni Natarajan and husband Natarajan Pillai of India, sister Radha Pillai and husband T.K. Pillai of India, father- and mother-in-law Gerald and Shirley Zumpano, brother-in-law Milton Jones, sisters-in-law Michelle Zumpano and Vickie Moran, and former wife and friend Cynthia Myerberg and her husband, David. Also dear to him were countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom he loved very much. The Pillai family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Kumar Zaman, his office staff, and the staff at Western Maryland Health System for their compassionate and professional care during his illness. Hospital attendants said Miller died of head, chest and pelvic injuries. City police said a negligent homicide charge was placed against Mrs. Judy Rue Harper, a 21-year-old resident of 164 Dutch Rd. She had minor injuries. Officers said her car and one driven by Joseph Holley; 30, of 649 Burlew Dr., collided about 7:30 a.m. at Bigley Avenue and Buckhannon Street. Miller was a passenger in the Holley car. Damage to both cars was set at more than $2,000. Miller's death was the 13th of the year in the city and the second on Charleston streets in two days. Surviving Miller are his widow, Cora Louise; two sons, Emmett R. and Frederick E., both of South Charleston; three daughters, Mrs. S. D. McGee of Charleston, Mrs. George P. Hamilton of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Richard W. She was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Phillip Hamilton in 1981 and also by a son, Phillip Hamilton, two brothers, Emmet Miller and Fred Miller and two sisters, Kathryn McGee and Ann Moran. Mrs. Hamilton attended First Baptist Church in Blairsville. Surviving Mrs. Hamilton are one son and daughter in law, David and Ellen Hamilton of Wetumpka, AL., two daughters and sons in law, Sally Elizabeth and John McConnaughhay of Blairsville, Kathryn Ann and Ronald Bagwell of Homestead, FL., eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive. FInterment will follow in the Meadow Wood Cemetery. on August 29, 2014.4

Graveside services with military rites will be at Cunningham Memorial Park. on November 16, 2011.2

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Julia Miller. He loved his family and loved to grow vegetables and give them away to friends and family. He joined the U.S. Naval Service and served proudly from 1941 to 1947. He retired from Union Carbide after working 37 years. He did free electrical labor when asked and helped to build two churches. He loved the Lord God and was a serious, devoted messenger for Him. He was a member of the Bible Center Church congregation, South Ridge Corridor G church. He was a longtime Bible study leader for Hansford Senior Citizens Center and Kenna Homes Bible study class. He studied at Appalachian Bible Institute, Beckley. Surviving are his sons, Frederick E. Miller Jr. and Ronald A. Miller (fiancee, Pat Harting); daughter, Susan Kozielec (Edmond); granddaughters, Sarah Holstein, Amy Griffith and Leah Kozielec; grandsons, Joshua Miller, Jamin Miller, Ryan Miller and Jonathan Miller; 11 great-grandchildren; and many cherished nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Dr. Michelle Burdette; VA Dr. Mahmood and nurse Linda Bricker; Hospice Care; Patty and Elby Thurman of The Haven, along with their staff; the wonderful Bible Center Care committee; and outreach ministers, the Rev. Jonathan Browning and Pastor David Jones. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens West Virginia Memorial Mausoleum Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you donate to Bible Center Church or your favorite charity, as Fred did. on January 24, 2013.10

Surviving are his widow of Clearfield, two sons, John M. McGee, Las Cruises, New Mex; Sidney Dewey McGee III, Lincoln, Neb; four daughters, Mrs. Doyle (Cynthia M.) Allen, Clinton; Mrs. James Ed (Doris) Campbell, Hinckley, Ohio; Mrs. Frank (Ann) Sklenar, Revenna, Ohio; Mrs. Kenneth (Sandra) Dessigper, Miami, Fla; 16 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, James L. McGee, Winston-Salem, NC. Interment in Aultorest Memorial Park. on November 27, 1985.5
