Dr. Bill W. "Billy" Lovingood1,2

M, b. September 20, 1931, d. July 30, 2011
Dr. Bill W. "Billy" Lovingood was born on September 20, 1931 at Murphy, Cherokee Co., North Carolina.3,2 He married Sally Belle Ferguson, daughter of Homer Jackson Ferguson Sr. and Mary Delia Wright, on May 31, 1954 at Jackson Co., North Carolina.1,2 Dr. Bill W. "Billy" Lovingood died on July 30, 2011 at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at age 79.3,2 He Chapel Hill - Dr. Bill Lovingood died Saturday, July 30, 2011 after waging a courageous battle against esophageal cancer. As per his wishes he died at his home, surrounded by family and friends. Bill was born in Murphy, North Carolina on September 20, 1931, the first of Edith and Wade Lovingood's nine children. He was a standout athlete in the western part of our state and was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Wake Forest University. Before leaving for his freshman year, he and his bride to be, Sally Belle Ferguson eloped, and were married in the Sylva courthouse. Bill's time at Wake was bisected by four years in the Navy, served aboard the minesweeper U.S.S. Aggressive. Following the service to his Country he returned to Winston-Salem, earning his B.S. degree and rounding out his athletic career. As a starting pitcher, he went undefeated in 1957 and posted a 0.58 earned run average, an A.C.C. record that still stands. He came to Chapel Hill in 1958 to begin his post-graduate studies, and went on to earn MPH and PhD degrees from the University of North Carolina. He accepted a teaching position in the Physical Education department at the time and remained there until his retirement in 1988. Thousands of Tarheel students over four decades enjoyed his popular lecture courses. From the early Sixties until the mid Seventies he served as Carolina's assistant baseball coach under his good friend Walt Rabb. Football Saturdays were always spent in Kenan Stadium where Dad worked to facilitate the concession sales. He also found time to coach many seasons in the Chapel Hill recreation department where he left a lasting impression on a generation of local kids. Dad's youth, spent largely in the Smoky Mountains hunting and fishing with numerous uncles, cousins and brothers fostered in him a lifelong love of all things outdoors. He loved to bird hunt with his buddies in the athletic department and the Rams Club. He never met a stranger, and would go fishing with anyone he could persuade to join him. Stories of missed shots or "the one that got away" made up the bulk of conversation when he met with buddies at Merritt's, Knight & Campbell or later in life, Johnny's Sporting Goods. "Doc" Lovingood was a man who was large in stature and had an even larger love of life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. We love you dad. He is survived by his wife of fifty- seven years, Sally; three sons, Joe, and wife Carol, John, and wife Mary, James, and wife Bobbi, and one daughter, Angela Robertson and her husband, Joey; six grandchildren: Brittany, Blake, Lillian. Julia, Carson, and Nick. Six of his siblings survive: Charles, and wife Pat, Bob and wife Brenda, Dan and wife Darlene; one unmarried brother, Johnny; sister, Alice Chastain and husband, Jimmy, and Anne Wells and husband, Hubert. He was predeceased by both parents as well as two brothers, Jack and Edd. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thanks to the nursing staffs of the U.N.C. cancer center and Hospice program, which did their very best in a difficult situation. A memorial service has been planned for Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to University Baptist Church in Bill's honor. on August 3, 2011.2
