Vernon died Friday, Jan. 21 at her home in Mt. Vernon. A celebration of Mrs. Sweet's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church at 139 Dayton in John Day, with Pastor Andy Anderson officiating. A potluck luncheon will follow at the church. Mrs. Sweet was born Jan. 8, 1945, in John Day. She was raised in Mt. Vernon and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. In the early sixties she moved to Portland to seek her fame and fortune and became a successful insurance broker, married and had two children. Her heart was never far from Grant County and the Blue Mountains. She and her children moved back to Dayville for several years in the early seventies but returned to Portland in 1976 to continue her career. In 1986 Mrs. Sweet suffered a disabling stroke. She moved back to Mt. Vernon and, despite her disabilities, lived happily for the next 18 years of her life as an active member of the community surrounded by her many friends and extended family members. She adored her four grandchildren, her little dog, Shelley, and country music. Mrs. Sweet is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Tonia and Tom Whitehead and her three grandchildren, Evan, Eliot and Emma of Corvallis; her son, Tyrone Lihs of Hillsboro; her granddaughter, Ariel of Clackamas; step-parents, Dar and Connie Rasmussen of Brookings; sister, Penny Godwin, of Clackamas; brother Randy Rasmussen of Prineville; brother, Rick Rasmussen of San Diego, Calif; her great aunt, Mary McKern of Mt. Vernon, and three nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her mother, Clea Richardson, father, Ed Leach, grandparents Valene and Otis Greene and Lois Lynch, and a nephew, Brett Ramussen. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Sweet's name may be made to the John Day Senior Center or the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd, John Day, OR 97845. on January 23, 2005.2

     Richard Augustus Sampey Last Rites Held for Richard A. Sampey - Settled near Malden in 1902 - Two Daughters Survive. Richard A Sampey, 80, who since 1902 has farmed eight miles west of Rosalia, was called by death at his home Tuesday, due to pneumonia and a weak heart. He was ill but a few days. Mr. Sampey was born in Lee County, Iowa, April 8, 1859 and died May 22, 1939. In 1889 he married Nancy Alice (sic)Laughbery who died in 1904. To this union three daughters were born, namely, Mary, Nellie and Bertha who died in infancy. Both daughters were living at the time of his death. He married Anna M. Reed in December, 1908, and to this union no children were born. The late Mrs Sampey died in 1930. He is survived by his two daughters, Mary Elmeda Siegel and Nellie Blanch Sampey: four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Malden Congregational Church at Malden Thursday at 2:00 P.M. with the Rev. D.E. Carter officiating. Burial was in Malden cemetery.1 He was buried at Pine City Cemetery, Pine City, Whitman Co., Washington.2 He was born on April 8, 1859 at Lee Co., Iowa.1 He married Anna "Annie" McKern, daughter of Isaac McKern and Mary "Polly" Barton, on December 4, 1907 at Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington.3,4 Richard Augustus Sampey died on May 22, 1939 at Pine City, Whitman Co., Washington, at age 80.1

Vernon, Monday, his death resulting from a heart attack. Mt. Tulloch was born at Oakdale, Calif., September 9, 1884, son of John and Annabelle Tulloch. Until recently, he was engaged in the livestock business in the Monument country, having come from California in 1925. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Anna Barga of San Francisco, Calif., and one brother, Earl Tulloch of Pendleton, Ore., also two step-sons, Earl and Homer Damon of Mt. Vernon. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the Driskill Mortuary chapel in John Day, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Josie Bach. Interment was in the Canyon City cemetery. on January 25, 1946.1

     Errol E. Damon was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., Washington.6 He was born on May 12, 1912 at Mount Vernon, Grant Co., Oregon.2 He married Wilma Nadine Hall on October 6, 1940 at Walla Walla Co., Washington.2,4 Errol E. Damon Errol E. Damon, owner and operator of the Professional Service Bureau and a prominent participant in business and civic activities, died at this home on Home Avenue early Wednesday morning from a heart attack. He was 48. He had complained of pains in an arm and the abdomen Tuesday afternoon, but seemed all right later. Death came in his sleep. Damon was immediate past president of the Walla Walla Lions Club, past president of the Little League Baseball Association and of the Blue Mountain Toastmasters Club, a member of the board of directors of the Walla Walla National Bank, of the Elks Lodge No. 287, Walla Walla Bowlers Club, and American Collecting Association and of Finance Underwriters, Inc. He was a charter member of the American Legion post of Mt. Vernon, Ore., and a member of the Walla Walla Chamber of Commerce. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Marshall Funeral Home chapel. Chaplain Lawrence Cousins will officiate. Damon was born May 12, 1912, in Mt. Vernon, Grant County Oregon to Wm. Edward Damon and Gerturde McKern. He was educated in that city and in Salem Ore., and was associated with the F. W. Woolworth Co. for 23 years, managing stores in Aberdeen, La Grande and San Francisco. He was married to Wilma N. Hall in Walla Walla on Oct 6, 1940. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in the European Theater until 1946. The family returned to Walla Walla in 1950 and Damon started the Professional Service Bureau. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; three children, Kerry, Randy and Denise, all at the family home: a brother, Homer Damon of Mt. Vernon, Ore., and three aunts. on April 19, 1961.2 He died on April 19, 1961 at Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co., Washington, at age 48.2

     Homer M. Damon was buried at Canyon City Cemetery, Canyon City, Grant Co., Oregon.3 His Social Security Number was 542-05-7002.8 He married Patricia A. Tubbs.9 Homer M. Damon married Edith Curl.6 Homer M. Damon was born on January 29, 1914 at Mount Vernon, Grant Co., Oregon.3,8 He died on January 19, 1974 at Bend, Deschutes Co., Oregon, at age 59.3,5 He Homer M. Damon, longtime owner of Damon's Mercantile in Mt. Vernon and the 1972 recipient of the Grant County Senior Citizen Award, passed away in Bend Saturday at the St. Charles Memorial Hospital. He was 59. Born in Mt. Vernon Jan. 29, 1914, and a graduate of the Mt. Vernon High School, he had lived in Grant County all his life, other than 10 years in which he had lived at Bend. Mr. Damon sold Damon's Mercantile to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Dahl, effective Jan 1, and had recently retired. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Driskill Memorial Chapel, John Day, with the Rev. Phil Ryan of John Day and the Rev. Fred Wafer, formerly of Mt. Vernon of Camas Valley officiating. Interment followed in the Canyon City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bob Sproul, Lattie Kirkwood, Charlie Lewis, Wayne Stutesman, Don Boyer and Joe Oliver. Honorary pallbearers were Ken Merrill, Bob Wetele, Ike Palmer, Fritz Horn, Joe Intile Jr. and Eddie Berg. A member of the Grant County Chamber of Commerce for the past 13 years, he was a past president of the organization and spent much time in promoting tourism in Grant County. For the last 11 years, he was the chairman of the chamber highway and parks committee and met with the Oregon State Highway Commission several times a year to get improved highways in Grant County and also to establish rest areas. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a member of Canyon City Masonic Lodge No. 54, AF&AM the Scottish Rite Lodge in Baker, the Al Kader-Shrine in Portland, John Day Elks Lodge, Mo. 1824 and the First Christian Church in John Day. Mr. Damon is survived by one son, Alan Damon of Bend; two daughters, Deanna Capplinger of Pendleton and Beth Sanford of Pasadena, Calif; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Errol Damon of Wall Walla, Wash; four grandchildren and several aunts, uncles and cousins. on January 24, 1974.3
