He attended the Old St. Peters Episco Church and School in Philadelphia, received his bachelor of arts from Concord College in Athens in 1942 as a music instrumental major. He was a member of the Concord Commanders. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army Air Force, he was discharged in July of 1943 as a first lieutenant while as a pilot he flew B-24’s and B-29’s. After his tour of duty, he was a band director in North Carolina public schools and high school golf coach. He retired from the North Carolina School System in 1981. He played in the Savannah Symphony and the Charleston South Carolina Symphony Orchestra. He toured the United States with big bands including the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Rainey. Survivors: his wife, Ella Nash Rainey of Lerona; stepchildren, Gloria Watts, Clarence, Nancy Jarrell Williams and Frank Patton Jarrell; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. The body has been cremated and the remains will be placed in the Mountain View Church Cemetery at Elgood. The Sandy River District American Legion Post 175 of Bradshaw and the Mercer County Veterans Council will conduct the military services at the church. on July 30, 1997.5
