The 33-year veteran educator died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack. Grant was a graduate of Averett University, where she majored in English and Church Ministry, and received a master's degree in music from the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. She was musically gifted and performed opera at several places in Louisiana and Mississippi. The 53-year-old teacher's grandest and most rewarding performances, however, were daily in the classroom at Dan River High. Students loved and respected her. The school community was shocked Thursday to learn of her death. Grant was known as someone who could do everything and anything. She was respected for her talent and commitment to education, but she was also known as someone who never met a stranger and was always kind to everyone. "She touched so many lives," said a co-worker. Grant was perhaps best known in the Dan River community for the major musical productions that she annually sponsored. The musicals brought out talents in Dan River students that even they didn't know existed. "She took kids who would never have had the courage to get up on stage and they would sing and dance," said a co-worker. Clarissa Knight, who was principal at Dan River High before becoming assistant superintendent for human resources for Pittsylvania County Schools, remembers when the annual Dan River musicals were just an idea. "I asked Frances what she thought about starting a musical and she didn't even think about it. She just did it. I had no idea the magnitude the production would turn out to be," said Knight. "She never turned a child down who wanted to participate. She would put them in somewhere." Grant scheduled rehearsals during the daily drama class period. This was so students who rode the bus home could participate. The annual musicals became such a part of the community that everyone looked forward to them. The Drama 4 class is in rehearsals for the late May production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat." Knight said Grant's influence has come full circle. She expects one of Grant's former students to step forward to make sure this year's production is completed. "She would like that," said Knight. on February 28, 2006.7
