Mark Douglas Layman Mark Douglas Layman, age 75 of Hardy, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, January 9, 2026. Mark was born on July 10, 1950 to the late Herbert J. Layman and Hazel Pauline Layman. He was preceded in death by his brother Herbert J. Layman, Jr. Mark is survived by his brothers, Robert Layman (Pansy) and Jon Layman (Debby). Three children, Brian N. Layman (Kristy) daughter, Arnie N. Layman and son, Travis W. Layman. Two grandchildren, Jenna E. Layman and Ryan Layman, along with several nephews, a niece and special friend, Jenny Saunders. Mark lived life on his own terms. He retired from Verizon at the age of 50 after a 30-plus year career, beginning when he was 18. He then followed his passion for "junk" and started selling estates and became an auctioneer, which he excelled at and is respected highly in the antique community. Even when he felt his worst, he would still want to talk about or watch online auctions and estate sales. Our Dad was a kid at heart; he loved in his own unique ways and was respected by many in the community. His life was full of hunting, fishing and wood cutting. He was a simple man who lived a life of his own making with no apologies for it. Brian and Amie wish to thank their brother Travis for the care he gave our dad during the past several years. Your sacrifices allowed Dad to remain in his home up until the day he passed. We love you, dad, and will miss you so much.6 He was born on July 10, 1950 at Roanoke, Virginia.3,4,5,6 He married Judy Lea Hunter on October 20, 1971 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.4 Mark Douglas Layman married Anne Rebekah Thierry on January 14, 1989 at Franklin Co., Virginia.4 Mark Douglas Layman and Anne Rebekah Thierry were divorced on October 30, 1991 at Franklin Co., Virginia.5 Mark Douglas Layman married Judy Lea Hunter on October 20, 2000 at Roanoke, Virginia.4 Mark Douglas Layman died on January 9, 2026 at Hardy, Franklin Co., Virginia, at age 75.6

Everyone will always remember her love for the holidays; big meals, a full house, and lots of love. Additionally, Judy always enjoyed going out to eat at her favorite restaurant, Montano’s. She eventually started preparing desserts and her famous She-crab soup, which was an occasional special on the menu. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Good Samaritan Hospice for their compassion during this difficult time. A special thank you to her family, dear friends, and Pastor Ricky Smithers for praying with her and surrounding her with love before meeting her Heavenly Father.3 She was born on March 4, 1952 at Norfolk, Virginia.1,2,3 As of October 20, 1971,her married name was Layman.1 She married Mark Douglas Layman, son of Herbert Jackson Layman Sr. and Hazel Pauline Hall, on October 20, 1971 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.1 Judy Lea Hunter married Mark Douglas Layman, son of Herbert Jackson Layman Sr. and Hazel Pauline Hall, on October 20, 2000 at Roanoke, Virginia.1 Judy Lea Hunter died on July 30, 2024 at Virginia at age 72.3
