Norma Jean Wilson died on June 3, 2017 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 86.4,5 She Norma Wilson Smith, 86, of Copper Hill, Va., passed away peacefully at South Roanoke Nursing Home on Saturday, June 3, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Smith; her parents, B.C. and Fannie Wilson; and her brother, A.D. Wilson. Norma is survived by three children, Bruce (Paula) Smith, Karen Petroski and Robin (Scott) Wallace; and grandchildren, Robert Bain Smith, Katie Smith, Andrew Wallace and Rachel Wallace. Also remaining to cherish her memory is her brother, Harmon (Martha) Wilson; and her sister, Margaret Ferris. Included in those whose lives were touched by Norma are her brothers-in-law, R.B. Smith, Herbert (Alice) Smith and Ray (Diann) Smith; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Curran and Ocie Smith; as well as many nieces and nephews. Norma was born on March 2, 1931, in Floyd County, Va., the first of four children born to B.C. and Fannie Wilson. She grew up on a farm in Floyd County and had a strong work ethic, a compassionate heart and an independent character. Norma was a one-of-a-kind cook who delighted in preparing meals for both family and church gatherings. Her talents, however, were not limited to the kitchen -- as she was an avid gardener who could often be found outside tending to, and arranging, her flowers. For many years, Norma was a nursing assistant at Skyline Manor Nursing Home and had a deep compassion for the residents, for whom she would often prepare her renowned homemade bread. Norma was a member of Thompson Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Roanoke County. She loved her church very dearly and looked forward to church meetings, loving the fellowship that she had with them. The family would like to recognize the dedicated care that she received from the staff at South Roanoke Nursing Home. The care that these wonderful, compassionate people gave to her in her final days was a huge comfort to Norma and her family. The family also wishes to recognize Dr. Vishal Patel of Carilion Clinic for the superb care that he gave to Norma, and for the kindness and empathy that he showed to her and her family. Burial will follow in Restvale Cemetery. on June 4, 2017.4

     Charles Robert "Charley" Smith was buried at Restvale Cemetery, Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.14,7 He Charles Robert Smith, 98, of Copper Hill passed away peacefully at the Salem VA Medical Center on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 – his 65th wedding anniversary. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Washington and Lou Cassie Smith and three brothers, Sherman, Wilbert and Sam Smith. Robert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Norma Wilson Smith and three children Bruce (Paula) Smith, Karen Petroski and Robin (Scott) Wallace. Grandchildren Robert Bain Smith, Katie Smith, Andrew Wallace, Rachel Wallace, Jennifer (Jon) Siff, Diana (Paul) Pemberton, great-grandchildren Rowan and Powell Siff and Nora Pemberton. Also remaining to cherish his memory are bothers Herbert (Alice) Smith, R B (Helen Sue) Smith, Ray (Diann) Smith, two sisters Myrtle Curran and Ocie Smith. Brother-in-Law Harmon (Martha) Wilson and sister-in-law Margaret Ferris and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Robert was born March 30, 1917 in the Huffville section of Montgomery County, the third of nine children born to Robert “Bob” and Cassie Smith. He grew up on a farm in Floyd County during the depression where he developed a strong work ethic and sense of frugality and responsibility that remained with him throughout his life. He loving working with animals and fondly spoke of plowing with horses and oxen when a boy. During his young adult life he helped build the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Copper Hill section of Floyd County. When his country called in January of 1942 Robert entered the US Army and completed basic training and cavalry school at Fort Riley Kansas and desert warfare training at Camp Coxcomb in the California desert. He arrived in Scotland in March of 1944 and entered the European Theater of Operations after landing on Utah beach in July 1944 as a member of the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron with George Patton’s Third Army. He served in four major campaigns in Europe: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. After the war Robert came back to Floyd County and soon went to work for the Norfolk and Western Railroad where he worked until his retirement 34 years later. Robert was a member and Deacon of Thompson’s Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Roanoke County. He loved his church very dearly and always looked forward to church meetings. He would always make an effort to greet each person individually and he loved the fellowship that he had with them. The family would like to recognize the wonderful care and especially the kind compassion that he received from Dr. Don Brady of Carilion Clinic. The family would also like to recognize the exceptional care and compassion that Robert received from the medical staff in the Palliative Care Unit of the Salem VA Medical Center. The loving care that these wonderful, compassionate people gave to him in his final days was a huge comfort to him and his family as Robert ended his journey in this life. Burial will follow in Restvale Cemetery with full military honors by Floyd VFW Post 7854 and American Legion No. 127.7 He was born on March 30, 1917 at Alleghany, Montgomery Co., Virginia.5,6,14,7 He married Norma Jean Wilson, daughter of Berthe Commodore Wilson and Fannie A. She was a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Settles; her foster family, Troy, Annie and Bill Conner; her husband, Kyle Joseph Wilson; her son, Joseph Wilson; great-grandson, Enoch Gray Hubbard; brothers, Charles Jr., Jim, Noah, and Clarence Settles; and sisters, Frances Riley and Helen Sheffield. Grace is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Troy (Eugene) and Susan Wilson of Copper Hill, Roger Wilson of Copper Hill, Donald and Sandy Wilson of Bent Mountain, and Sharon Wilson of Roanoke; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Florence Settles of Goodview, Johnnie and Edna Settles of California, Evie Wilson of Check, and Frances Conner of Copper Hill. She also has ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the kind staffs at Skyline Manor Nursing Home and NRV Medical Center for their loving care and support. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by six brothers, Will, Commodore, Artis, Kyle, Charlie, and Enzo Wilson; and two sisters, Dorothy Carr and Martha Frye. Emma is survived by two sisters-in-law, Graces Wilson of Copper Hill and Evie Wilson of Check, Va; also, a large number of nieces, nephews, greatnieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews and special friends, Charles and Betty Jean. A service celebrating Emma's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2004 at the Lotz Roanoke Chapel officiated by Rev. Juan Barr. Interment will follow in Restvale Cemetery in Floyd County. Her nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Arrangements by Lotz Roanoke Chapel, 1001 Franklin Road, S.W. on August 17, 2004.2
