Peter Riley Poff Sr.1,2,3

FatherGeorge Gottlieb "Georg" Pfaff2,3 b. circa 1734, d. circa 1799
MotherCatharina Margaretha Griesbach2,3 b. circa 1741, d. after December 21, 1797
Peter Riley Poff Sr. was buried at Head of the River Cemetery (also known as Salem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery), Rt. 221, Check, Floyd Co., Virginia.3 He Peter is thought to have been in Augusta Co. in 1792 because his name appears with a George Poff on a tax list. In 1800 Peter and George are both listed on the delinquent tax list of Augusta as having gone "to French Broad". This is a river that flows from North Carolina to Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1798 Gorge Poff, Sr. and Jr., are listed but in 1798 and 1800 only one George is listed. It is assumed that George Sr. died about 1798 because his name is missing. It seems that Peter arrived in Montgomery Co. and purchased a farm on Wilson's Creek. On Dec 28, 1803, he was granted a land deed of 96 more acres. In a few years it seems the family moved near Check, Virginia (now in Floyd County) on Little River, still part of Montgomery County. Peter continued adding to his farm. Tax records show he owned a sawmill in 1813 and a gristmill in 1814. When Peter died in 1830 his family divided his 665 acres of land. The following information is provided by Mrs. James Eunice (Furrow) Dewitt of Copper Hill, Virginia. Peter Poff purchased 42 acres by deed, price, $400 from Nathaniel Lucas and Wife Sarah on Mar 18, 1805, on Meadow Run, a branch of Little River and adjoining Daniel Conner's property. Peter Poff purchased 333 acres of land by deed, for $1000 in Virginia currency. This land was from Nathaniel Lucas and his wife Sarah on waters of Little River dated Mar 18, 1805. The area that Peter Poff Sr. settled in Montgomery County Virgina is now part of Floyd County and is near the communities of Check and Copper Hill. He owned a mill and land along the old 'Bent Mountain Road,' which is now route 221. Many Poffs still reside there and probably still own some of the original tract.4 He was born on March 3, 1768 at Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.3 He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Pickle circa 1790 at Augusta Co., Virginia.1,3 Peter Riley Poff Sr. Peter Puff taxed on one white male above the age of 16 and two horses, mares, mules, or colts on March 10, 1794 at Augusta Co., Virginia.3 He Peter Puff taxed on one white male above the age of 16 and three horses, mares, mules, or colts on April 30, 1795 at Augusta Co., Virginia.3 He Peter Puff, listed directly below George Puff, Senior in tax listings taxed on one white male above the age of 16 and two horses, mares, mules, or colts in 1797 at Round Hill, Augusta Co., Virginia.3 He Taxed on one white male above the age of 16 and four horses, mares, mules, or colts in 1798 at Augusta Co., Virginia.3 He Peter Puff paid a $0.72 tax on one white tythable and six horses on April 13, 1799 at Augusta Co., Virginia.3 He Peter Poff taxed on one white male above the age of 16 and five horses in 1800 at Augusta Co., Virginia.3 He Peter Poff taxed 24 cents on two horses in 1802 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.3 He Peter Poff taxed 24 cents on one white male above the age of 16 and two horses, colts, mares, or mules in 1803 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.3 He Granted a land deed of 96 or more acres on December 28, 1803 at Wilson Creek, Montgomery (now Floyd) Co., Virginia.3 He left a will on September 14, 1830 at Montgomery Co., Virginia; WILL OF PETER POFF, SR.
