Don spent four years in the United States Air Force, stationed in Texas and Alaska. While serving at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska, he witnessed the largest earthquake registered in the United States, known as the Great Alaska Earthquake and the Good Friday Earthquake. The quake measured 9.2 in magnitude on March 27, 1964. Don was recognized by the Air Force for his actions during the earthquake disaster period of March 27-29, 1964. Don volunteered to enter the Anchorage Alaska Communication System Toll Building, which had been declared unsafe and perform the emergency duties of telephone operator. He remained on duty day and night to provide essential communications during a period of great need. Don and Joanne were avid Hokie Football fans. They had season tickets and never missed a home game. They also traveled to many away and bowl games. Even after they could not go to the stadium, they watched all televised games.      Donna Lee Harris Donna Lee Oliver of Blacksburg passed away Saturday, August 16, 2025, at home with her family around her. She was born July 31, 1944, to the late L.H. (Red) and Ivree Hilton Harris. She was married to the love of her life, Freddie Lee Oliver, for 49 years. Donna worked at VT for many years as a secretary and later served as secretary at Lutheran Memorial Church in Blacksburg. Donna was a lifelong member of St. Michael Lutheran Church and served on many groups. Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Freddie; her parents; her brother, Bill Townsend; brother-in-law, Reece Bedwell; great-niece Renee' S. Brown; and nephew Steve Bedwell; and many other family members. Donna is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-law; Brian Lee and Tammy Oliver, Darron Scott Oliver; her four precious grandsons, Joshua Lee, Jeremy Scott, Cameron Scott, and Braydon Michael Oliver. She is also survived by her sister Bee Harris Bedwell; sister-in-law Millie Townsend; brother-in-law, Terry Oliver; and sister-in-law Judy Alls; niece Karen Bedwell Brown and husband Mack Brown; great-niece Jada N.      Thomas Sidney Oliver Thomas Sidney (Tommy) Oliver, age 74, of Blacksburg died Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at his home. He was born in Montgomery County, Va. on March 31, 1945 to the late Sidney Lee and Dorothy Slusser Oliver. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Freddie Lee Oliver. He owned and operated Oliver’s Garage since 1972. Tommy was also an auto mechanic teacher at Blacksburg High School from 1989 until 2011. Tommy loved spending time with his family, working on cars, fishing, riding around with Debora, and farming especially with his father years ago. He is survived by his wife, Debora Byrd Oliver; daughters and sons-in-law, Janet Alderman, Kimberly and Tim Hall, Carma and Donnie Woods, Jamie and Michael Bland; eight grandchildren, Hunter Woods and wife Allison, Dylan Woods, Spencer Alderman, Tyler Hall, Mason Bland, Madison Alderman, Logan Alderman, and Emilie Hall; sisters and brother-in-law, Martha O. Huffman, Judy and Willis Alls; brother and sister-in-law, Paul Terry and Carol Oliver; sister-in-law, Donna Oliver; numerous nieces and nephews; special son and partner, Jackie McCann and his family; special friends, Jim Irby, Mike Kaylor, Sen Marimuthu; his four legged babies, Toby and Jake.      Carol Elaine Robertson Carol Elaine Oliver, 75 of Salem, Va passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. Born, in New Castle, VA on Friday, September 2, 1949, to the late William Wilson Robertson and Gladys Virginia Belle Carper Robertson. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Paul Terry Oliver; daughter, Noelle Oliver (Trina), and son, Travis Oliver (Katie); siblings, Jimmy Robertson (Peggy), Bobby Robertson (Barbara Jean), and Linda Lee (the late Bill Lee); grandchildren, Jackson Taylor, Levi Taylor, Trenton Oliver, Miles Oliver, and Brix Oliver; and special friends Donna Owen and Karen Sloan.      Donald Edward "Donnie" Nester was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^5,4 He was born on June 30, 1947 at Roanoke, Virginia.² He married Ricki Laine Janney, daughter of Fred Joseph Janney and Edith Virginia Poff, on April 14, 1967 at Roanoke, Virginia.^1,2,3 Donald Edward "Donnie" Nester died on November 5, 2003 at Virginia at age 56.⁴ He Donald Edward Nester, 56, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 2003, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was employed by Concrete Specialties in Roanoke where he served as vice-president and general manager for many years. He was also an avid hunter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Evelyn Nester; a brother, Robert Nester; and a sister, Carolyn Webb. Surviving family includes his wife, Ricki L. Nester; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa D. and Russell Belcher, Tammi N. and Tim Gearhart, Tonya and Petty Officer Matthew West; and three beautiful grandchildren, Dustin Edward Belcher, Ashley Marie and Chad Edward Gearhart; a brother and sister-in-law, Raymond H. and Linda Nester; a sister-in-law, Sandy Nester; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close and devoted friends.
