She was born February 28, 1937 to Nelson and Gladys (Radford) Ingram in Floyd, Virginia. Norma Jean married William C. Simpson December 3, 1960, who preceded her in death in 1992. Along with being an active military wife and mother, Norma Jean had 40 years of civil service with 34 years at Fort Leavenworth. Survivors include two sons, William C. Simpson Jr. (Diane), Kansas City, Missouri, Stephen Simpson, Wichita, Kansas, two grandchildren, Will Simpson, Josie Simpson and one sister, Linda Short, Roanoke, Virginia. Family will receive friends, 2 till 4 p.m., Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Davis Funeral Chapel. A procession will leave Davis Funeral Chapel on Monday May 4, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. for the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Pioneer Chapel, Fort Leavenworth. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. on April 30, 2015.3

She is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 35 years, Ira Lee Poff. She lives on in the hearts of her children, Seanmichael and his wife, Kaitlyn, Becky and her husband, Josh, Johnny and his wife, Trish, and Amy and her Stacey. Valinda doted on her grandchildren, Maddie, Jake, Hunter, Britney, Gracie, Peyton and Zach; as well as great-grandchildren, Axel, Huntleigh and Alayna. She is survived by siblings, Ray and Shirley. Valinda was preceded in death by her mother, Annie; and siblings, Louise, Donnie and Sam. She was a veteran of the United States Army National Guard where she served as a radio specialist and fell in love with a handsome staff sergeant who would become the love of her life, Ira. Valinda was a lover of people, always known for sharing stories, telling jokes and making friends with just about everyone she would meet. Graveside Military Honors will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. on November 15, 2019.2
