Pasquale J. "Pat" DeCusatis was buried at Most Precious Blood Cemetery, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania.2,4 His Social Security Number was 187-18-2417.5 He was born on February 9, 1922 at San Mauro, Italy; The SSDI has a birth date of Feb 11, 1922.5,2 He married Arleeda Sutton, daughter of Mack Francis Sutton and Maggie C. O'Neal, on October 3, 1949 at Hazleton, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania.1,2,3,6 Pasquale J. "Pat" DeCusatis died on June 5, 2007 at Pennsylvania at age 85.5,2 He Pasquale "Pat" DeCusatis, 85, left us for a better place the morning of June 5. He loved his family, friends, Hazleton and the Yankees. He was quick with a joke and always went out of his way to help those in need. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Born Feb. 9, 1922, in the small town of San Mauro, Italy, he was the son of Eustachio and Grazia (Cuda) DeCusatis. When he was 10 years old, he and his sister, Angelina (11), the late Angelina Giannott, from Long Island, N.Y., traveled on the ocean liner Conte Biancamano, across the Atlantic to Ellis Island in America to meet their father who lived in Hazleton and had gone ahead of them to start a new life. While growing up in Hazleton, Pat learned that hard work and helping others was the true road to success. His brother, the late Fred DeCusatis, from Middletown, Del., was born during those years. He attended Most Precious Blood Parochial School and Hazleton High School, but, like many others of his day, had to quit before finishing so that he could support himself. During World War II, Pat worked building Liberty ships in Baltimore. After the war, he taught himself to run power shovels that could move up to 200 tons of broken earth in every bucket. That skill, his boundless work ethic and friendly manner, landed him jobs with Correale"s bituminous operation in West Virginia and Pagnotti"s operations in Ohio, Colorado, Alaska and Canada. It was in West Virginia that Pat met Arleeda Sutton, who became the love of his life and wife for 46 years before she passed away in 1995. Those were the golden years, filled with fun, friends and family parties at their homes on Carson and East First streets. Those years were fruitful with the birth and marriage of their children, Patricia to Joseph Huxta, Macungie; Stanley to Cynthia Lincoln, Havre de Grace, Md; and Anne to Michael Serfes, Newtown. Out of those bonds, Pat's eight grandchildren were born, which gave him the greatest joy. In chronological order they are Jennifer, Joseph, Nathan, Elizabeth, Alison, Audrey, George and Gabriel. Pat"s life journey continued when he and Arleeda moved to West Hazleton, where he eventually retired in 1988 at the age of 68 after working for over 50 years. He tried to fill his time with hobbies such as woodworking, but found the most fulfillment helping others. He volunteered delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, but suffered a major accident that laid him up for nearly a year. Once back on his feet, he found renewed joy by volunteering for Volunteer Home Care – Hazleton Area and spent his time giving housebound elderly people rides to their various appointments. He had a heart of gold and helping hands to match. Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, was his stepmother, Antonia Durso. Interment will be in Most Precious Blood Cemetery, Arthur Street, Hazleton. on June 8, 2007.2
