He was 72. Born July 11, 1934, in Roanoke, Va., his family moved to Washington, D.C., in 1937. After studying photography, he graduated in 1951 from the now-defunct Chamberlain Vocational High School in Washington, D.C. He entered the U.S. Army in 1955 and was stationed in Hawaii, where he worked as an entertainment specialist for three years. Mr. Gearheart worked for Harris & Ewing Photography in Washington, D.C., now out of business, for a year as a news photographer after leaving the Army. Following his employment with Harris & Ewing, he accepted a position as a file clerk with the Federal Communications Commission, where he eventually became a congressional liaison until he retired in 1989, after 30 years. He enjoyed singing barbershop style music and belonged to the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Chord Foundation, a quartet, for five years. He also enjoyed playing bridge, which continued into retirement when he became involved in playing the card game online. Through Internet bridge, he met people from all over the world at a bridge convention in Las Vegas. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Sallie Leslie Gearheart; two sisters, Rasteen Moore and Elizabeth Dreschler; and three brothers, Melvin, Ray and Dennis Gearheart. He is survived by two sons, Garry Allen and William Mason, both of Allentown, Pa; a sister, Gloria Kiessling, of Waldorf; his partner, Edward Sherman, of Elkridge; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Oct. 21, 2006 at Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory in Odenton. Interment followed at Donaldson Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to: The American Cancer Society, 1393 Progress Way, Suite 908, Eldersburg, MD 21784. on October 26, 2006.5

     Theodore Irving "Sonny" Gearhart was buried at Crestview Memorial Cemetery, 489 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, Halifax Co., North Carolina.1 He married Hilaria Theresia Ritter.2 Theodore Irving "Sonny" Gearhart was born on July 21, 1931 at Hemphill, McDowell Co., West Virginia.2,3,1 He died on November 9, 2011 at Roanoke Rapids, Halifax Co., North Carolina, at age 80.3,1 He ROANOKE RAPIDS — Theodore Irving "Sonny" Gearhart, 80, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids. He was born July 21, 1931 in Hemphill, W. Va., and was raised by his Grandmother in Ironto, Va. He was one of three brothers that grew up living a hard mountain life in the Appalachians of Virginia. It was there that he gained his outstanding work ethic and lifelong love for the outdoors, enjoying hunting and fishing throughout the rest of his life. He was employed by Asplundh tree service before joining the Air Force at an early age. His time in the Air Force allowed him to travel and experience many different cultures across the globe. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He settled in Roanoke Rapids in the 1970s and eventually retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant after 26 years of service. He went on to operate the Thelma Service Center, Blank's Mini Mart and The Beverage Saver. He will be remembered by most for his great smile, quick wit, generosity, and great attitude towards life. He loved his family, hunting, fishing, gardening, baseball, cooking for people, and having a good time with friends. He is survived by his wife, Hilaria Gearhart, of Roanoke Rapids; two sons, and their wives, Jeff Gearhart and Dena Blount Gearhart, of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Frank Gearhart and Terry Metts Gearhart, of Chapin, S.C., and three grandchildren, Samuel Gearhart, of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Shauna Gearhart, of Clemson, S.C., and Kayla Gearhart, of Chapin, S.C.. Also surviving is a special person, Clay Holt, who was like a son to Ted. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., today, Sunday, Nov. 13, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Services, 507 Highway 158 W, in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 14, at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Pius officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. on November 12, 2011.1
