A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, 1502 Seventh St. in La Grande. Burial will follow at the Island City Cemetery. Mary was born July 29, 1917, to Ellis and Audrey (Simmons) Chadwick in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School with the Class of 1936. On May 29, 1937, she married James Fredrick "Fred" Beeman in Walla Walla. She worked as an operator for the telephone company and in the custodial department at Eastern Oregon University. She was a member of Royal Neighbors, the VFW Auxiliary and the Lions Club. She served as treasurer for the city of Island City for many years. She enjoyed her grandchildren, working crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. She enjoyed traveling, especially her trips to see family in West Virginia. Survivors include her children, George Beeman of Portland, Lowell Beeman of Island City, Tom Beeman of Tacoma, Bob Beeman of Island City and Kathy Spears of La Grande; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Memorial contributions may be made to GRH Hospice in care of Daniels-Knopp. on January 18, 2010.2

Thompson, 52, veteran second assistant La Grande fire chief, collapsed and died late yesterday while on duty at the city fire department. Life-long resident of La Grande, Thompson first joined the fire department Oct. 10, 1929, as a hoseman. He was promoted to rank of second assistant chief July 28, 1941, and was fourth on the department's seniority list. Fire chief Parley Hutchison credited Thompson, a veteran first aid expert, with saving numerous lives during his 21-year career on the department. Stricken at 9:45 p.m., apparently by a heart attack, Thompson was taken to St. Joseph hospital by county first aid car, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Funeral service arrangements will be announced later by Daniels funeral home. Thompson attended Our Lady of the Valley Catholic church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Betty Thompson; sons, Jack and Larry, and a step-son, Robert Meredith, all of La Grande; brothers, Ben, Yakima, and William, Rockaway, Ore; sisters, Mrs. Frances Geltlngs, La Grande; Mrs. Minnie Park, Rockaway, Ore; Mrs. Mabel Newsom, Cal., Mrs. Mary Chipman, Rockaway, and Maurine Metcalf, Drukee, Ore. on April 13, 1950.5

     Eldon Kenneth Lilly was buried at Olney Cemetery, Pendleton, Umatilla Co., Oregon.2 He was born on August 7, 1927 at La Grande, Union Co., Oregon.2,5 He married Maxine Elaine Ely on August 28, 1949 at Boardman, Morrow Co., Oregon.2,6 Eldon Kenneth Lilly died on May 21, 2016 at Pendleton, Umatilla Co., Oregon, at age 88.2,5 He Eldon Kenneth Lilly passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at McKay Estates Assisted Living in Pendleton, Ore. He was born to William and Doris Lilly on August 7, 1927, in La Grande, Ore. In 1945, Eldon graduated from Boardman High School, Boardman, Ore. He was known for his athletic accomplishments at the state level during his time in high school and college. Eldon attended OSU in Corvallis, Ore. In 1946, he was drafted and served in the United States Army. After the Service, he entered Eastern Oregon College, La Grande, Ore., where he received his teaching certificate and later received his Masters of Science Education through the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho. Eldon married Maxine (Ely) August 28, 1949, in Boardman, Ore. They lived in La Grande where Eldon taught at the elementary, junior and high schools over a span of 18 years. The family relocated to Pendleton with their children, Jim, Jan, Jay, Jerry and Joyce, in 1967. Eldon retired in 1987 after over 30 years of teaching and coaching. He touched many lives through his dedication and passion for students to succeed in the classroom, on the football field, basketball court, track, and in the Driver’s Ed program. He loved to hunt and fish with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in addition to gardening and supporting his family in all their interests. He is survived by his children Jim Lilly (Kennewick, Wash.), Jan (Brett) Cook (Pendleton, Ore.), Jay (Donna) Lilly (Central Point, Ore.), Jerry Lilly (Boise, Idaho), and Joyce (Doug) Barak (Hermiston, Ore.); grandchildren Whitney Lilly, Paige Lilly, Holly (Blake) Starr, J.R. (Cynda) Cook, Jennifer (Dan) Fitch, Kristen (Ben) Kennedy, Dustin (Jamie) Lilly, Aubree Lilly, Jared Barak and Nathan Barak; great-grandchildren JR Starr, Connor Cook, Addyson Cook, Peyton Kennedy, Kinley Kennedy, Jaydon and Gage; and brothers Bob Lilly (Hermiston, Ore.) and Richard (Barbra) Lilly (Yakima, Wash.) Eldon was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Maxine Lilly, and his parents. A graveside service for both Eldon and Maxine Lilly will be held on July 8, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. on June 9, 2016.2
