Richard George Lester "Judge" Jernigan Richard George Lester Jernigan was the first born of Mary Louise Emmeline Cole and John Jackson Jernigan. His birth date is 25 July 1877 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia, and was nicknamed and called "Judge" by all his friends, business acquaintances and family. Just how he became known and nicknamed as "Judge" is somewhat a mystery, since he was not an authentic judge of any kind. One unconfirmed story told was since he was the eldest of six sons and four daughters, his parents bestowed responsibilities upon him to take charge of his siblings. He was given that nickname when he would hear and make decisions for settling matters of controversy between his brothers and sisters.

Congress passed the Organic Act in May of 1890, which established the Territory of Oklahoma with Guthrie as the Capital. The surplus lands not allotted to Indian Tribes were being opened to settlement and joined to Oklahoma. The greatest opening of all occurred when the United States bought the Cherokee Outlet and opened it , along with the Tonkawa and Pawnee Reservations, on 16 September 1893. More than 50,000 pioneers made this historic run for land. Judge's family had moved from Georgia to Tennessee and sometime between the summer of 1890 and early 1893, moved to Checotah, Oklahoma, to participate in the land rush. Judge was sixteen years young with the second opening of the Cherokee Strip and was left tending his siblings while the elders participated in the run.

At the age of nineteen, Judge became tired of being a nursemaid to his brothers and sisters and left Checotah, Oklahoma, for Texas to seek his fortune and began farming around an area some 50 miles northeast of Dallas. His uncle Thomas Pinkney Jernigan preceded Judge to Texas and had settled in Ector in 1895. It is apparent that Judge may have been drawn to the area due to Pinkney as he temporarily settled just a few mile west of Ector in Savoy, Texas.
At the age of twenty, he married Margaret Burgess Taylor in Savoy. Margaret was born 17 July 1880 in Hutchens, Texas, to Ann Brundage and Lewis H. Taylor. Judge and Margaret finally settled in Bells, just about 2 miles west of Savoy. Their marriage yielded ten children with Georgia, the first, dying at nine months. The second child was Virgil Lois, followed by Cecil Lester, then Ethel Lewis, Edna Pear., Mary Louise, Melvin Ben, Opal Lee, Elmer Fleming and Earl Emily. Judge and Margaret must have had a peculiar since of humor in bestowing names on the children, giving feministic middle names to two of the sons and masculine middle names to two daughters.
The fact that Cecil Lester, the second child, was born in Checotah, Oklahoma, on 17 October 1902 indicates that Judge and Margaret may have moved from Texas to Oklahoma. But they were back in Texas on 3 September 1904 for the birth of Ethel Lewis. Judge turned from farming to owning and operation of a restaurant in McKinney, Texas. He owned and operated combination grocery and gas station in Bells, located on the intersection of US 82 and 69 Highways and on the School Board for several years, retiring before 1948.
Judge told one of his grandsons a story about life in Oklahoma when he was young. Indians raided the area and massacred some settlers. His family hid and was bypasses. Then he said some of the Jernigan Clan were slaughtered around a creek, whence the creek was named, "Jernigan's Creek". The story is narrated here while being somewhat knowledgeable about a Jernigan trait for stretching the truth.
Margaret died 9 June 1939 and is buried in Bells, Texas. Judge lived till 5 February 1957 and is buried next to Margaret.6 He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Bells, Grayson Co., Texas.4 He was born on July 25, 1877 at Macon, Bibb Co., Georgia.2,4 He married Margaret Burgess "Maggie" Taylor circa 1897 at Savoy, Fannin Co., Texas.1,6 Richard George Lester "Judge" Jernigan died on February 5, 1957 at Lubbock, Lubbock Co., Texas, at age 79.3,4
