He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 39 years, Betty Lynn Robertson Manning; a sister, Mary M. Hogan, of Roanoke; a brother, Ted Manning, of Salem; a special family friend, Janet McNabb; and a sister-in-law, Becky Lewis, of Las Vegas, Nev; nephews, Chris Hogan, of Roanoke, and Robert Hogan, of Ridgeville, S.C; his family at Giles Dialysis Center; and his beloved Yorkie, Chelsea. He was born Dec. 22, 1912, in Copper Hill, Va., to the late Lewis Wade and Ocie Ida Wade (Manning) Shorter. He was a graduate of the Westerville High School, was in the 3 C's, served on the U.S.S. Lexington before Pearl Harbor as a radio operator. He retired in 1977 from Ohio Edison as an electrical engineer after 38 years of service. Garland was also an amateur radio operator, member of the Prospect Knights of Pythias, the Marion Radio Club and the Ohio Edison Retirees Club. He enjoyed doing yard work, gardening and loved being around dogs. On Dec. 24, 1934, he married Emma Josephine Long and she died Jan. 11, 1995. Surviving are three daughters, Roberta Fitzpatrick of Marion, Barbara (Sonny) Carns of Sun City West, Ariz. and Lorie (Dan) Anderson of Richwood; a son-in-law, Dale Whiteman of Sun City West, Ariz; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn Jo Whiteman, and two infants sons, Robert John Henry Shorter and Garland Richard Shorter and two brothers, Carl and Garnet Shorter and a great-grandson. Private family graveside services will be held Friday at the Otterbein Cemetery in Westerville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion Area Humane Society at 2264 Richland Road, Marion, OH 43302. The Stofcheck Funeral Home in Richwood is in charge of arrangements.

Fitzpatrick and he preceded her in death on April 1, 1996. Roberta was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and she was a 1955 graduate of Pleasant High School. She was very active throughout her life with many activities with her family and things she was involved with in the community. Roberta was a member and an officer in the Marion County Kennel Club and she had a strong passion for raising, handling, and showing dogs. Her special breed were German Weimaraners. Two of her champion dogs were Baron and Apollo, and they were her boys because her and Charles had all daughters. She loved spending time with her daughters and was involved in all of their many activities in their lives and also with all of her grandchildrens activities. Roberta was a big Country Western Fan and a big sports fan. She loved all kinds of sports, but especially the OSU Buckeyes, the Carolina Tar Heels, and the San Antonio Spurs. Roberta was also a very active volunteer with the Marion Palace Theater and also besides the time she spent with her family, she had many, many friends that she truly loved spending time with. Roberta leaves behind her four loving daughters, Linda (Tom) Brill of Grapevine, TX., Jill (Frank) Johnston of Jacksonville, FL., Caroline (Jim) Metcalf of Bucyrus, Ohio, and Sandra (Kevin) Stewart of Westerville, Ohio; there are also seven grandchildren surviving, Frank Johnston, Heather (Doug) Mantia, Eric Brill, Kyle Brill, Michael Metcalf, Adam Brill, Matthew Metcalf; and one great-granddaughter survives, Eliana Mantia; two sisters also survive, Barbara (Albert) Carns of Sun City West, Az., and Lorie (Dan) Anderson of Richwood, Ohio; as well as numerous nieces and nephews survive. Besides her parents and her husband Roberta was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Brill; a great-granddaughter, Sophie Mantia; a sister, Kathryn Whiteman; and two brothers; her twin Robert, and Garland Richard Shorter. Funeral Services will be on Saturday March 29, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Boyd-Born Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be A.I.M. Kevin Kehn. Burial will follow in the Grand Prairie Cemetery. on March 26, 2014.5

(Laura) Whiteman of Ogden, Utah; parents Garland and the late Josephine Shorter of Prospect; sisters, Roberta Fitzpatrick of Marion, Barbara (Sonny) Carns of Sun City West, and Lorie (Dan) Anderson of Richwood; her grandchildren, Tiffany (Dustin) Perry, living and attending college in Winnemucca, Nev., Karline Valentine, living and attending college in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Chayse Whiteman, attending high school in Ogden; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Ethan of Winnemucca; eight nieces and nephews and her many friends in the Marion area. A family memorial service was held in Sun City West on June 27, 2004, to celebrate what her life meant to those who loved her. She was a wonderful, wife, mother and grandmother and her family will miss her dearly.
