"Hade" Conner and Virginia Arrista "Rissie" Clemmons, on September 20, 1914 at Mercer Co., West Virginia.^1,3 Oakey "Okey" Meadows died on October 25, 1948 at Baltimore, Maryland, at age 56.^4,5 He Funeral arrangements are incomplete for Oakey Meadows, 56-year old deputy sheriff in Slab Fork District who died yesterday in Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md. He had gone to the hospital for brain surgery. The body will be returned here today. Meadows, who was a Mason and an Elk, is survived by his widow, Mrs. Carrie Meadows, three daughters, one son, seven brothers and four sisters. The daughters and son are Mrs. Virginia Calvert, Miss Elzia Meadows and Tommy Meadows, all of Princewick, and Mrs. Frazier Gill of Walkertown. The seven surviving brothers include Golden Meadows, Princewick; Clinton Meadows and Fred Meadows, Beckley; Wiley Meadows and Milton Meadows, Winding Gulf; Thomas Meadows, Miami and Willis Meadows, Coal City. The four sisters are Mrs. Easter Crouch, Piney View; Mrs. Bessie Gross, East Gulf, Mrs. Virie Fleshman, Winding Gulf, and Miss Donna Meadows, Coal City. on October 26, 1948.⁴

Born at Mabscott on May 3, 1924, he was a son of Mrs. Carrie Conner Meadows and the late Oakey Meadows. He was a retired miner and a member of UMWA Local 6109 at East Gulf and a member of the Ancient Free and accepted Manson Mountain Lodge No. 156 at Coal City. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Joyce Cantley Meadows; one son, Harold Lloyd (Butch) of Coal City; one brother, Donald L. of Coal City; one sister, Mrs. Virginia Calvert of Princewick; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Willie Meadows of Shady Spring; one grandchild. Bora July 29, 1929 at Princewick, she was a daughter of Mrs. Carrie Conners Meadows, Princewick, and the late Oakey Meadows. Mrs. Gill was a Missionary Baptist. Other survivors include her husband, Frazier, Coal City; a daughter, Mrs. David (Vicki) Nelson, Coal City; a sister, Mrs. Jethro (Virginia) Calvert, Princewick, and two brothers, Elzie and Donald, City. He was a tipple foreman for Westmoreland Coal Co. and a member of Trout Valley Primitive Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 156, Coal City. Surviving: sons, Gary of Coal City, Oakey of Lerona; brothers, F.G. and Obie, both of Oneonta, Ala; sisters, Gladys Whittington and Alma Smith, both of Oneonta; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Born May 26, 1923, at Walkertown, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Thomas Gills and Chloe Cole Gills. Mr. Gills served his country proudly during World War II, he was a longtime member of the Coal Ci-ty Community Church, and he owned and operated the Coal City Barber Shop. He also played and loved bluegrass music and won several fiddle competitions in the state of West Virginia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Gills was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona Meadows Gills; brother, Grady Gills; and a sister, Eva Gills Cummings. He was survived by his sister, Bonnie Gills Cole of South Carolina; two daughters, Vicki Gills Nelson and husband, David, of Coal City and Stephanie Gills Holland and husband, Kenny, of Nash-ville, Tenn. He will be sadly missed by his two loving daughters. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Arista Nelson Wise, Christina Nelson Reed, Dustin Nelson, Kaden Slade Holland, Kristen Holland, and Keeley Holland; and great-grandchildren, Samantha Wise, Caitlin Wise, Gracie Wise, Mary Katherine Reed, Harleigh Reed, and Nikki Wise. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at Williams Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia. Burial will follow at Meadows Family Cemetery, with Pastor Jack Tankersly officiating.
