After graduating from STOCO High School in 1951 he joined the Navy to see the world, and he saw much of it from the decks of Aircraft carriers. After almost 24 years he retired and started a second career at NARFE at NAS Pensacola. Retiring again in 1995 he spent many hours tending a large garden growing wonderful vegetables. He loved being at home. He was a long time member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son Robert L. Rice. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, S. Joanne Gentry Rice and his son Michael D. Rice and his stepchildren; Morgan, Stephen, Chasity, Shelby, John and Keith; two brothers, Elmer Rice Jr. (Marietta) of Sophia, WV and Larry Rice (Tina) of Oak Hill, WV.
