Burk, 91, of Cassell’s Board and Care Facility, Princeton, formerly of Wickham Avenue, departed this life early Tuesday morning, March 3, 2009 to be united with her Lord and Savior. Born May 19, 1917, in Bluefield, she was the daughter of the late Gratton “Grat” Burk and Edith Hearn Burk.Having grown up in Bluefield, she lived their until 1944, when she moved to Princeton. Ms. Burk had worked for the Celanese Corporation in Narrows, Virginia for more than 41 years, retiring in 1982. While her health permitted, she was an active member of the Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton; she was also a member of Willing Workers Sunday School Class, the Wesleyan Service Guild and served with different committees within the Church. She loved her neighbors on Wickham Avenue, and her church family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Burk and Kyle Burk along with a sister, Helen Lilly. Survivors: Her last sibling, Hazel Williams of Troutville, Virginia; her dear friend and caregiver, Sue Lucas and her family, whom were loving, giving and caring for her, every day, for many years. Burial will follow in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Bluefield. on March 4, 2009.2

Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, Mr. Lowder left home to serve in the Navy during World War II. His plane was shot down in Indochina and he survived the crash with severe wounds only to be captured by the Japanese. When the war ended, he returned to the U.S. to complete his studies at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Mr. Lowder attributed his survival to superior physical fitness before the plane crash and he became a lifelong advocate of healthy living. He held teaching and coaching positions at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, and several universities, including Auburn University in Alabama; Parks College of St.Louis University; Washington University in St. Louis; and the Meramec campus of St. Louis Community College. In 1964, Mr. Lowder moved to Kirkwood, Missouri, with his wife Gwen and sons Eric, Craig and Kevin. Gwen died in 1998 and Eric in 2005. Joe Lowder is survived by his sister Mary Catherine Lowder-Bailey of Charleston, West Virginia; son Kevin of Kirkwood, son Craig and wife Sue who currently live in Japan, his beloved companion Dorothy (Dot) Ebeling of Sunset Hills, Missouri, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. on November 30, 2006.13

Lowder and Virginia C. Hearn Lowder, Mrs. Lowder-Bailey moved to Charleston in 1938 with her family. With the exception of her time away at universities for her education, Charleston has been her home ever since. She was educated at Bethany College, West Virginia University, Auburn University, and Morehead State University. She taught at Upper Witcher Grade School 1951-52; Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School 1952-59; and Charleston High School 1959-64. An associate professor of English at Morris Harvey College/University of Charleston from 1965-1994, she was voted Teacher of the Year for 1987-88. Thousands of Charleston residents will no doubt fondly remember the time they spent with her in classrooms and on athletic courts. Many of the English teachers in Kanawha County learned their grammar and how to teach grammar under her instruction. She was married to Dr. Frederick E. Bailey Jr., who predeceased her in 1991. A nationally respected senior chemical research scientist with Union Carbide/Dow, Dr. Bailey received acclaim for more than 60 U.S. patents for formulas he developed, among many other achievements. Mrs. Lowder-Bailey was the last survivor among her siblings: sister, Francis Lowder Morrison; and brothers, Daniel Lowder and Joseph Lowder. She is survived by her nephews, Kevin Lowder of St. Louis, Mo., and Craig Lowder of Mahopac, N.Y; brother-in-law, John W. Morrison III of Tazewell, Va; and many dear lifelong friends. She was an active member of the community, serving many organizations: the Municipal Beautification Commission, the Greater Kanawha Valley Scholarship Committee, Patchwork, Tennis, Inc., and the First Presbyterian Church. She generously supported many local and national charities, most notably, Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc. Her ashes will be interred in the columbarium at St. Matthews Episcopal Church on Norwood Road. on June 13, 2010.4
