Mr. Elder was also known for his intense interest in historic preservation. He spearheaded the restoration of numerous 18th and early 19th century dwellings. Among these are the 18th century DS Tavern and Halifax House which today house the successful 1740 House which he and his wife founded, and historic Woodstock Hall, both located in Albemarle County. A loving Christian father of two children and grandfather of five, Mr. Elder is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Elder; daughter Roxanne and her husband Gerald; his son Clarence Elder Jr. and his wife Judy; two brothers Richard and Robert Elder and his five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Joseph, Mary Ann, Kaitlin and Jessica. on November 7, 1993.⁶

     Jean Stone Campbell Jean Campbell Wheby, May 2, 1934 - May 4, 2024. Jean Campbell Wheby passed from this life on May 4, 2024, two days after her 90th birthday. She leaves a legacy of beauty, caring for others, and unconditional love. Jean is survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Munsey S. Wheby, MD; her children, Rose Hollinshead (Ralph), Munsey J. Wheby (Katherine), and Jeanie Morrow; and seven grandchildren who lit up her world: Stephen and Henry Hollinshead; Campbell and Margaret Wheby; Will, John and Ben Morrow; sisters Mary Ann Elder and Carolyn Walter; brother James Campbell; and many adoring nieces and nephews. Jean was born in Salem, Virginia, the third of six children. Upon graduation from Andrew Lewis High School, where she was a member of the May Court and a class officer, she enrolled in the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia in 1952. It was at UVa where she met her one true love, a medical student named Munsey Wheby. After her graduation from Nursing School and his from Medical School, she and Munsey wed in Roanoke on August 5, 1955. They then moved to New York for Munsey's internship at New York Hospital. There Jean worked as a NICU and surgical unit nurse and later in the office of a well-known pulmonologist. After a few moves for Munsey's medical and military career, including stints in Washington, DC, New Jersey, and Puerto Rico, they returned to Charlottesville in 1966 when Munsey joined the faculty at UVa Medical School. They resided there for the next 51 years before moving to Sanford, NC in 2017 to be near their children. Jean went on to be an incredibly accomplished homemaker, mother, and avid Wahoo sports fan. She also volunteered with many organizations including PTA, Girl Scouts, the Democratic Party, and The Garden Club of Virginia. Jean remained active with the Nursing School and helped establish the Mary Jane Morris Endowed Scholarship. Later, Jean and Munsey had the opportunity to travel the world through Munsey's leadership in the American College of Physicians and the People-to-People Program. Back at home in Ivy, Jean masterminded an annual "Camp Wheby" weekend for the grandchildren where she engaged her friends and neighbors to provide tennis lessons, horseback riding, archery, target shooting, and many more joyful summer activities which fostered a closeness among the cousins which continues. Jean touched many through her passions for entertaining, gardening, decorating, and needlework. She was accomplished in all without any formal training. The garden at her home in Ivy, Virginia was a featured "friendly" garden during Historic Garden Week. She was knowledgeable in antiques and historic preservation helping to restore both the 1740 House and Woodstock Hall in Charlottesville. Her dinner parties were legendary. Her friendships were many and long-lasting. She was as warm and caring as anyone can be and all who knew her benefited from her kindness and generosity. The world was a more beautiful place with her in it.      Robert Russell Walter was born on May 11, 1939 at Washington, D.C..^1,2 He married Carolyn Sue Campbell, daughter of Elwood Grady Campbell Sr. and Elizabeth Virginia Creasy, on June 25, 1994 at Franklin Co., Virginia.^1,2 Robert Russell Walter died on June 9, 2014 at Boones Mill, Franklin Co., Virginia, at age 75.^2,3 He Robert Russell Walter, age 75, died on Monday, June 9, at his beloved home in Boones Mill, VA. He was born on May 11, 1939, the only child of Russell William and Sara Salome Brown Walter. Bob grew up on the Fort Meade Army Base in Maryland, where his father worked as a civilian engineer. He received his BA degree from American University in 1962 where he served as president of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity, his MA in English from Indiana University in 1966, and studied as a Visiting Scholar at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He taught for 32 years at Roanoke College and was a much-loved teacher of American literature, the short story, Western & Native-American literature, Chaucer, the English language, advanced grammar and composition. He will be remembered as one who cared deeply for his students and for his calling as a teacher and who truly made a difference in the lives of students. He retired as Associate Professor Emeritus in May 1999. Professor Walter served as editor for 26 years of The Roanoke Review, a national literary journal representing Roanoke College, and served on numerous committees and forums at the College. He was a poet and fiction writer, publishing in many national literary magazines. Outside the classroom, he was a fly-fisherman, an avid golfer, a college sports enthusiast, and a world-traveler with Paris being a favorite destination. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his former wife and the mother of his children, Janet Gornto Walter. Surviving to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 20 years, Carolyn Campbell Walter; his children, Robert Lowell Walter (Casey) of Silt, CO and Kari Walter Rowley (John) of Basalt, CO; his step-children, Brian Douglas Barger (Elizabeth) of Matthews, NC, and Jennifer Barger Blugerman of Troutville, VA; nine grandchildren: Bennett, Brigs and Emory Walter, Hayden and Macy Rowley, Meagan and Emily Barger, and Emma and Matthew Blugerman.
