Frances Alberta Profitt Mrs. Florence P. Martin celebrated her 82nd birthday on Wednesday, October 6, 2004.  On Thursday, October 7, she will also celebrate her anniversary of 65 years of marriage to Elvin M. Martin.  The couple was married in October, 1939, and resided in their little country home in Locust Grove for about 37 years.  Later the Martins moved to the Town of Floyd, where he ran Martin's Heating and Refrigeration until 2001 when he became ill.  He was 84 years old when he retired. The couple has four children, Paul, Linwood, Norma Jean Conner and Frankie, and seven grandchildren.  The couple is enjoying retirement, although Mrs. Martin says Elvin is the only one who has officially retired.  As she puts it, "a woman's work is never done."
  on October 7, 2004.4 She died on January 8, 2014 at Virginia at age 91.3 She Frances Alberta Profitt Martin, 91, of Floyd, went home to be with her Savior on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. She was glad to be relieved of this earthly body, and looked forward to being in Christ's presence with all of her loved ones who have gone ahead of her. Frances was a very crafty person. She made many beautiful things such as: dolls, foot stools, trash cans, spreads for furniture, quilts, and anything she could think of. She loved to sew and make clothes for herself and children. She also did a lot of sewing for other people when they asked. She was a member of Stonewall Primitive Baptist Church for many years. She enjoyed her fellowship with the members and the teachings of Christ. She is now going home to join her loved ones: her husband of 69 years, Elvin Martin; mother and dad, Getter and Alberta Profitt; and nine brothers and sisters who have gone ahead of her. She is survived by four children, Paul J. Martin and wife, Barbara of Floyd, Glenwood J. Martin and wife, Donna of Christiansburg, Frances Norma Jean Conner and husband, Edwin C. Conner of Copper Hill, and Frank E. Martin of Floyd; eight grandchildren, Cecil and Leisa Martin of Floyd, Tammy Martin- Worley and Stacy Martin of Christiansburg, Sandra Huff, Teresa Martin and Cindy Weaver of Floyd, and Richard Martin; eight great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great grandchild; one brother, James Profitt and wife, Frances of Floyd; two sisters, Margaret Jones of Salem, and Helen Atkins and husband, Richard of Elliston; brother-in-law, Elmer Webb of Floyd; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Chlonetia Martin and Arlie Thompson of Floyd; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mavin and Jack Steel of North Carolina; sister-in-law, Coreen Martin, Christiansburg; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Gardner Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Graham Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Cemetery. Cheatham, minister of the gospel, according to the marriage records of Campbell County, Virginia. Martha Ellen Going stated for the record that her parents were James and Gabriella. Mrs. Williams was a member of Central Methodist Church, the Ladies Bible Class, and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Services: The body will remain at the Nicely Funeral Home until time for the service which will be held from the chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. A. Irvin Orndoff will conduct the service and the interment will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be C. G. Kennedy, J. W. S. Burks, Russell Smith, Fred Sherman, C. M. Brown, E. C. Westerman, J. Ed Hall, Calvin Staton, and Herbie King. Born June 16, 1928 in Preble County, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Charles Preston and Mary L. Lilly. Mrs. Hale was a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren and retired from Tultex. She was a loving wife to her husband of 51 years, Robert L. Hale. Surviving the bountiful love of their mother are three daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Jack Conner, Copper Hill, Va., Ginny and Mark Smith, Roanoke, Sandy and Jim Perdue, Copper Hill; and one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Debbie Hale, Cloverdale. The greatest love of her life were her five special grandchildren, Chris Conner, Greg and Amanda Conner, Heather Hale, Brad Hale and Brian Perdue. Also surviving are one brother, Marion Lilly, Richmond, Indiana; one sister, Harriet Fawcett, Richmond, Indiana; very special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tommy and Jane Hale, William Hale and Jetta Holthaus, Nadine and Maurice Slusher; her very special friend in Christ, the Rev. Frank Wimmer; her special cousins-in-law, Loretta Luckadoo and Mary Condon; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her neighborhood family who watched over and cared for her, Dr. James Witten, Amy and the Pulmonary Staff in the Pulmonary Department of Lewis-Gale; and the special angels of love from Gentle Shepherd Hospice, Linda, Lorita and Debbie. Memorials may be made to Copper Hill Church of the Brethren, or Gentle Shepherd Hospice. A memorial service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, November 18, 2000 at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, by the Rev. Dale Bowman and the Rev. Sonia Oliphant.
