Ann Bird Ann Bird Lawless, 61, a freelance writer and journalist who had worked for various newspapers and radio stations in West Virginia, died of cancer Aug. 14 at Arlington Hospital. Mrs. Lawless, a resident of Sterling, was born in Hinton, W.Va. She graduated from the West Virginia University school of journalism. In addition to working for newspapers and radio stations, she was the executive assistant to Robert McDonough, the West Virginia state Democratic Party chairman during the 1960 presidential primary between John F. Kennedy and Hubert H. Humphrey. Winning the West Virginia primary was a crucial step in Kennedy's run for the White House. In 1970, Mrs. Lawless moved to the Washington area. She was a freelance speech writer, and at her death she was working on a volume of poetry. Survivors include her husband, George E. Lawless Jr., whom she married in 1949, of Sterling; and three sons, William Edward Lawless of Plano, Tex., George Edward Lawless III of Sterling, and John Martin Lawless of Providence, R.I.4 She was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.7 She was born on March 19, 1929 at Hinton, Summers Co., West Virginia.5,4 As of September 5, 1949,her married name was Lawless.3 She married George Edward Lawless Jr. on September 5, 1949 at Hinton, Summers Co., West Virginia.8,3,4,5 Ann Bird died on August 14, 1990 at Arlington, Virginia, at age 61.4,5
