Born in Gaston County, he was the son of the late John William Bennett Sr. and Margaret Faye Capps Bennett. A retired Detective Sgt. of the Metropolitan Police Dept., Washington, D.C., after 16 years of service. He was a former co-owner of J. Bennett Trucking Company and Bennett Motor Sports of Kings Mountain. He served with the Cleveland County Sheriff's Department for 15 years. He was very artistic and produced several limited edition prints. He was a member of Kings Mountain Baptist Church and Fraternal Order of Police and N.C. Sheriff's Association. He loved working in his yard and around his home and being with his family. He served in the Air Force. To his nephew, Joe Bennett, "He will be forever grateful for a kidney." Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Karen L. Bennett of Kings Mountain; two "Daddy's Girls," mini Schnauzers, Gracie and Lillie; brothers, John W. Bennett Jr. and wife, Lori, of Deltona, Fla., Rick Bennett and wife, Ann, of Kings Mountain and Lynn Bennett of Kings Mountain; and nieces and nephews, Casey Galliford of Seattle, Wash., Lauren Bennett of Deltona, Alex Bennett of Los Angeles, Calif., and Joe Bennett of Deltona. Burial: Mountain Rest Cemetery. on March 21, 2009.3

Major Nichols received his commission through Air Force ROTC at Memphis State in 1990. He graduated from pilot training in 1992 and was assigned to the F-16. He flew the F-16 during assignments in Saudi Arabia, Korea and at Hill AFB. He had over 50 hours of combat time and was awarded the Air Medal. In 1997 he was assigned to Columbus AFB, MS, as a T-37 flight instructor pilot. Major Nichols transitioned to the Air Force Reserves in 2001. He was a highly respected simulator and flight instructor pilot in the T-38 with over 3,200 flying hours. He touched the lives of thousands of Air Force pilot training students. In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Michele Schiffer Nichols of Aberdeen, MS, son, Jacob Nichols of Collierville, TN, daughter, Shelby Nichols of Starkville, MS, step sons, Samuel Stukenborg of Little Rock, AR, and Benjamin Stukenborg of Little Rock, AR, step daughter, Rachel Stukenborg of Little Rock, AR, Brothers, Russ Nichols of Germantown, TN, Tim Nichols and his wife Tracy of Ripley, TN, niece, Ashlee Nichols, and nephews, Cole Nichols and Tyler Nichols. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Judith Ray Hertz; a sister, Glenna Lemons; and two grandsons, Kevin and Christopher. Survivors include his wife, Beulah Cochran of Alderson; a daughter, Marsha Dale Ray of Alderson; a son, Richard Martin Sr. of Oak Hill; a sister, Virginia Tilley of Mullens; five grandchildren, Robert Flack II, Joseph Flack, Richard Martin Jr., Deborah Lee Martin and Cara Lee Evans; great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Alexandra, Shayanne, Megan, Erica and Kimberly and great-great-grandchild, Caleb Ray McMillion. Burial will follow in the Fletcher Addition of the Alderson Cemetery, Alderson with Military Graveside rites. on October 21, 2011.3
