He grew up in a small coal mining town in southern WV and attended Washington District High School. He served in the Army in WW II, from 1944 to 1946 and from 1946 to 1948 as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division. JJ prided himself on being a paratrooper while serving his country. He fought at the "Battle of the Bulge" In 1947 he married Nora Bell Collins and was blessed with their only daughter, Brenda, in 1953. He worked as an electrician in coal preparation plants until retiring in 1983. JJ was also a proud member of the Beni Kedem Shrine, Lodge #153, his last time being a "Nobel" After the death of his first wife in 1995, he was married to Beulah Clendenin from 1998 to 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister's Margaret Mara and Lurleen Carr, brother Clinton Carr and grandchild, Laura Thaxton. He is survived by his daughter Brenda Simon and son in law David Simon of Hurricane, WV; grandchildren, Jamie and Lisa Simon, John and Amber Simon, Brad Simon, Josh Thaxton, Sara Thaxton-Sayre, John Sayre and Katie Simon. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all.      Shirley J. Carr Shirley J. Thompson, Jan 21, 1935 – May 14, 2021. Thompson, Shirley J. Carr, 86, passed away May 14, 2021, after a long battle with dementia, at Woodlands Retirement Community in Huntington, WV. Shirley was the middle child of James Valentine Carr and Mary Malinda (Young) Carr; she was born in Olcott, WV, and was the apple of her daddy’s eye. After graduating from Charleston High School in 1953, Shirley attended Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN, then moved to New York City where she completed her bachelor’s degree at New York University while living in a women’s residence. Shirley loved the City and worked as an executive assistant, then at a television station for several years where she made lifelong friendships. Shirley was working a temporary position at KPMG Peat Marwick when she met the love of her life, David William Thompson. Shirley dedicated years of her life to that job as David’s personal assistant and thereafter to caring for him until his death in 2009. She was truly a remarkable woman. Shirley will be laid to rest in the Thompson family plot at Eel River Cemetery, Churubusco, IN.3 She was buried at Eel River Cemetery, Eel River, Allen Co., Indiana.3 Her married name was Thompson.3 She married David William Thompson.3,4 Shirley J. Lurleene spent the majority of her youth in the Charleston area and attended local schools. In her late teens, she moved to New York and later to New Jersey, where she worked as a bookkeeper and as a dispatcher for the Millville police department. Lurleene loved a good detective story and was an avid pro wrestling fan. Lurleene requested that she be cremated, returned to her childhood home and laid to rest with her parents. Interment, after the memorial, will be at Spring Hill Cemetery. on March 9, 2006.3

     A. Gordon Marra was buried at Palenville Village Cemetery, Palenville, Greene Co., New York.2 He Gordon Marra, 96 of Palenville passed away on November 27th 2018. He was born in New York City on June 19, 1922. He was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Carr Marra. He lived in New York City with his second wife, Ann until they moved to Palenville, New York in 2005. Gordon had started singing as a choirboy when he was about 10 years old. He continued his musical career, taking piano and singing lessons. He joined Robert Shaw Chorale. He sang in the Chorale until shortly before he enlisted in the U. S. Marines. He served in the South Pacific for almost 4 years during World War II in the US Marine Corp. When he returned home after his discharge, he contacted Robert Shaw, who was now conducting the Fred Waring Glee Club. Gordon was hired to join the Fred Waring Orchestra an Glee Club where he sang until the early 50s. He continued performing in Night Clubs in and around New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. He recognized that there was a need for a Home Base for performers, where they could have a permanent address and phone number to receive their messages and mail, when they were out of town. As the business grew, so did the number of stars that his company serviced, such as Alan Alda, Barbra Streisand, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, and Denzel Washington, among many others. His business continued to grow into a large group of Media/ Television response Companies. He retired in the 1980s. After his move to Palenville, he started painting in his newly built studio, something he was unable to do in their apartment in the city. He spent many hours in his studio and produced several hundred paintings. He didnt want to sell any of them, but gave many of them to his friends and relatives. Gordon is survived by his beloved wife, Ann, a sister-in-law Shirley Carr Thompson of New York City, a sister-in-law , Dorothy and her husband Donald Castaldo of Catskill, New York, Mary Spinelli, a sister-in-law of Catskill, New York, and his brother-in-law Gene Spinelli and his wife, Marisa of Carmel, New York, and many nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Palenville Cemetery.4 He was born on June 19, 1922 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York.1,3,4 He married Margaret Evelyn Carr, daughter of James Valentine Carr and Mary Malinda Young, on April 6, 1946 at Fredericksburg, Virginia.1,4 A.      Margaret Leana Smith was buried at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.2 She was born on February 25, 1932 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.2 As of June 17, 1950,her married name was Carr.1 She married Clinton Crockett Carr, son of James Valentine Carr and Mary Malinda Young, on June 17, 1950 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia.1,2 Margaret Leana Smith died on July 24, 2015 at Belmont, Pleasants Co., West Virginia, at age 83.2 She Margaret Carr White, 83, of Charleston, went home to be with her Lord on July 24, 2015, at Care Haven of Pleasants in Belmont, W.Va., after an extended illness. Margaret was born Feb. 25, 1932, in Charleston, W.Va., daughter of the late Omay C. Smith and Aretta S. Russell Smith. She was employed many years and retired from Carbon Industries where she worked as a faithful secretary to the late Jim Thomas and L. Newton Thomas. She also was a longtime member and past president of the Pilot Club of Charleston. Margaret was a member of Bethany Baptist Church where she loved singing in the choir. She also enjoyed cooking and loved to set a beautiful table when entertaining. Her favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends and caring for others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clinton C. Carr; her second husband, Ethon E. White; and her sister, Betty L. Tolliver. Margaret is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Larry W. and Kathy J. Carr of St. Marys, W.Va., where she lived for the past five years during her illness. She loved her four granddaughters, Joanna (Tim) Seigneur of Williamstown, Stephanie (Zach) Easton of Wheeling, Shannon (Tim) Schramm of Dayton, Ohio, and Marisa Carr of Clearwater, Fla. She had nine great grandchildren who could brighten her day with their love and exuberance. She had several nieces and nephews who were very close to her, and many lifelong friends. Burial will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. on July 26, 2015.2
