Roger Sherwood Elmore was born on December 19, 1927 at Roanoke, Virginia.5 He married Leah Hester Rexrode on August 16, 1952 at Charlottesville, Virginia.5,6 Roger Sherwood Elmore died on July 30, 2015 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 87.5 He Roger Sherwood Elmore passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 30, 2015, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on December 19, 1927, in Roanoke, Va., where he lived most of his life. After graduation from Jefferson High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II. While attending Roanoke College, he was called to active duty during the Korean War. Upon discharge from the Navy, he married Leah Rexrode, and moved to Charlottesville, Va., where he continued his studies at the University of Virginia, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. Upon graduation, he was employed for the next 33 years in the Business Sales Department of Liberty Mutual Insurance Company where he became a distinguished member of the company's Hall of Fame, the department's highest recognition. He retired as manager of the Roanoke office in 1987. A life-long Presbyterian, he served the Lord faithfully as deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and choir member in Roanoke as well as Marco Island, Fla. Well known for his beautiful tenor voice, he is most remembered for two of his favorites, "Seek Ye the Lord" and "He Touched Me." In addition, he was active in Sertoma Club, Habitat for Humanity, Gideons International, Lay Renewal, and Crossroads Bible Institute. He was honored to have been appointed to serve as Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church US, the church's highest court. His later years were spent worshipping at Christ the King Presbyterian Church in Roanoke where he was a charter member. As long as his health allowed, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, especially cruising, but he thoroughly enjoyed boats of all sizes. Until the onset of Parkinson's Disease, he enjoyed sailing and was an active participant in the racing program at the Virginia Inland Sailing Association (VISA) on Smith Mountain Lake where he learned to sail. He sailed in the Chesapeake Bay, Santiago Bay, West Indies, the Intracoastal Waterway from New Bern, N.C., to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and participated in overnight races from Marco Island, Fla., to Key West and the Dry Tortugas. He especially enjoyed a two-week bareboat cruise in the Grenadine Islands. In addition to his membership at VISA, he was a member of the Sailing Association of Marco Island, Fla. A former trumpeter and lifelong lover of jazz, he thoroughly enjoyed a fabulous impromptu backyard concert by the Brass 5 given in his honor on March 15, 2015. Family, friends, and neighbors gathered to greet him and enjoy the very special time. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie W. Elmore and Mary Raines Elmore; a brother, Col. Norman E. Elmore; sisters, Annah Lee Clingenpeel Crawford, Mary Jane Overstreet and Jeannine Bousman; daughter, Lisa Elmore Cox; and son-in-law, Edward A. Natt. Left to cherish his memory, his loving and faithful wife of 49 years, Tressie Sigmon; sons, Kenny Sigmon and wife, Marie, Ronnie Sigmon and wife, Carrie, and Andy Sigmon and wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Chris, Caitlin, Nick, Tori, Chase, Dalton and Cory Sigmon; a very special sister, Maxine Sink; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Loretta Sigmon, Eugene and Joyce Ann Sigmon, Nicki and Sue Sigmon, Geraldine (Hamp) Sigmon, and Ruth (Wayne) Sigmon . Bill also had a special relationship with his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Doris Nichols, John and Shirley Mauk, John and Teenie Moran, Gordon and Annie Nichols, George and Flossie Moran, Burton Nichols; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the family members and friends who helped in Bill's around the clock care, Maxine Sink, Stevie Moran, John (Little Biddy) Mauk, Eugene and Joyce Sigmon, Burton Nichols and Linda Highsmith, Bobby and Loretta Sigmon, Maxine Sink, Geraldine Sigmon, Ruth Sigmon, Sandy Hodges, Tommy Lee Furrow, Sandy Donovan, Lisa Layman, Mark Nichols and Garnett Arrington.
