Also surviving are sister, Joyce Stacy (Cecil), of Roanoke; sisters-in-law, Thelma Jones, of Roanoke, Frances Jones, of Hickory, N.C., Evelyn Johnson Jones, of Roanoke, Ruth Hodges Horning (Ray), of Roanoke, and Betty J. Woolwine, of Coldwater, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Greg Jamison and Susan Williams, RN and all the helpful staff at the Home Based Primary Care from Salem VA Medical Center. Garvice Eugene Jones Sr. SFC Garvice Eugene Jones Sr., (Retired), 82, went home on Sunday, August 12, 2012, to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ face to face and be reunited with many friends and loved ones waiting for him. He was a faithful Christian and a member of Bible Baptist Church. A Korean War Veteran, he served four years in the United States Navy. He retired in June, 1986 from the Civil Service as a technician for the Virginia Army National Guard and in 1990, from the Department of Defense with 27 years service. "Gene", as he was known by family and friends, was a accomplished local bluegrass musician and played the mandolin with several bands including the Bluegrass Revival and Country Buddies. He was one of the "Founding Fathers" of the Fiddle & Banjo Club and had served as president and chaplain. In his hay-day, he won numerous trophies and awards. In recent years, he shared his music singing at church and nursing homes. He was predeceased by his parents Claude and Lala Peters Jones, son, Rodney Jones, brothers, Elvin, Wilford and Aubrey Jones. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Johnson Jones; daughter, Debbie Berube (Paul), of Smith Mountain Lake; two sons, Garvice Jr. (Dede), of Craig County and Mark Albert Jones, of Roanoke; sister, Joyce Stacy (Cecil); brother, Hillard Jones (Doris); sisters-in-law: Thelma Jones and Frances Jones; grandchildren, Billy and Robert Wack, Angela and Amy Jones, and Christina Jackson; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kaylee and Stephen Jackson, and Amy and Billy Wack; also, his little dog, Pepper. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park with full Military Honors by the 29th Inf. Association. Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Virginia Veterans Care Center and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their loving and excellent care; the Honor Guard from the 29th Inf. Evelyn Marie Johnson Evelyn Johnson Jones, 82, of Roanoke, Virginia, gained her Heavenly wings and began singing with the angels on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. She was born in Bedford County, Virginia, on September 20, 1937 to Albert T. and Myrtle Phillips Johnson. The family moved to Roanoke in the early 1940s for job opportunities. Evelyn was a 1955 graduate of Jefferson High School. Soon after graduation, she met the “Love of her Life,” Garvice Eugene Jones, and they were soon married. Motherhood was her calling and soon the family was growing. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Deborah Jones Berube; sons, Garvice E. Jones Jr. (Deidre) and Mark Albert Jones; grandchildren, William W. Wack III (Tina), Robert Wack, Christina Jackson (Michael), Angela Acres (Scott), and Amy Deacon (Brian); and eight great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; and her beloved son, Rodney Claude Jones. Though Evelyn was a stay at home mom, she did work for the Roanoke City Police Department as a School Crossing Guard for several years in the early 1970s. Besides motherhood, she was deeply devoted to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and has been a member of Bible Baptist Church in Garden City for many years. Music was a staple in our household, especially Bluegrass Gospel and many hours were spent playing music at church and various nursing homes. Evelyn was the best mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend anyone could ever have. The family wishes to thank the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit and Good Samaritan Hospice for their excellent care and compassion. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Pam; his son, Jeff East and his wife, Kim, of Sioux Falls, SD; his daughter, Karen English and her husband, Tim, of Bedford, VA; his stepson, David Trout and his wife, Chasity, of Summerville, SC; as well as four grandchildren, Jake East, Kelsee English, Cullin Mitchell and his wife, Brynn, and London Mitchell; and one great-grandson, Easton Rothgeb. William was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Betty East; and his granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth English. He graduated from Giles County High School and then spent four years in the United States Air Force. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 36 years. William also was a member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge #163 for 50 years, a member of the Kazim Shrine Clown Unit, and the VFW Post #4522.
