Eric Bolster, of Charleston, S.C; and by six great-grandchildren, Daniel and Stuart Avant, Johnson and Bates Hagood, and Davis and Stephanie Bolster. Also surviving is her brother, Phillip A. Hutson, of St. Petersburg, Fla. She was a native of Virginia, being born in Ringold, Va., but she attended public schools and lived most of her life in the Roanoke area. She lived in Hopewell and Smith Mountain Lake communities but returned to Roanoke in 1996. Mrs. Blankenship retired from Civil Service in 1971, after approximately 25 years with the Veterans Administration, Internal Revenue Service, and the United States Army. She also served in the Naval Reserve during the mid 1950s. After her retirement she worked as a librarian assistant while residing in Hopewell. Mrs. Blankenship was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge # 33 in Roanoke, and served as Grand Matron in 1964 to 1965. She was also a member of the Riverdale Baptist Church for many years. Graveside services at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on May 10, 2010.4

     Murphy Cleo "Pete" Smith Murphy “Pete” Cleo Smith, 103, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 2, 1922, in Franklin County, Virginia to the late Leonard Dewey Smith and Blanche Peters Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Caterina Marchetti Smith; siblings, Norvell “Toby” P. Smith, Glenver “Jack” O. Smith, J.W. Archie Smith, and Estelle Smith Stowe; and son-in-law, O. Douglas Cumbia II. Pete honorably served in the United States Army during WWII in the 5th Army, 85th Division, 337th Infantry, Charlie Company. He was stationed in Africa, France and Italy. After separating from the service, he worked at Stanley Furniture for 36 years until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of American Legion, Post 11, in Bassett. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Martinsville, Virginia. Pete is survived by the following family members: daughter, Elaine Smith Cumbia; son, Carl Marino Smith (Gail Chitwood Smith); grandchildren, Dwight David Smith (Nancy Quezada Smith) and O. Douglas “Chip” Cumbia III; great-grandchildren, David Murphy Smith and Daniel Marino Smith; and many special nieces, nephews, and extended family. The Smith family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Sara Campbell and her exceptional team of caregivers at Fork Mountain Adult Home. Their compassion, kindness, and attentive care brought great comfort to Pete and meant the world to our family. We will always cherish the love and dignity they showed him during his time there.      Menerva Estelle Smith was buried at Roselawn Burial Park, 103 Clearview Drive, Martinsville, Virginia.2 She Estelle Smith Stowe, 97, of Martinsville, VA, left our world to be with the Lord on March 15, 2024. Estelle was born to Leonard and Blanche Smith in Henry, Virginia, on February 28, 1927. She was preceded in death by both parents, her brothers, Norvell, Glenvar, and Archie, and her husband, Major Robert Lee Stowe. She is survived by her two children, Lisa (Rob) Turner of Martinsville, and Tracy (Lisa) Stowe of Ridgeway; her grandchildren, Robert Stowe and Chelsea (James) Curtis, both of Ridgeway; as well as her older brother, Pete Smith, of Collinsville; and several nieces and nephews. The family will celebrate the life of Estelle at Roselawn Burial Park, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.2 She was born on February 28, 1927 at Franklin Co., Virginia.1,2 As of February 18, 1956,her married name was Stowe.8 She married Robert Lee Stowe on February 18, 1956 at Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., South Carolina.8,2,11 Menerva Estelle Smith died on March 15, 2024 at Virginia at age 97.2

     Hubert Alvah Scott Hubert A. Scott, Aug 8, 1923 - Oct 3, 2018. Hubert A. Scott, 95, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, Oct 3, 2018. He was welcomed into Heaven by his Lord and Savior and joined the love of his life, Reba. Their love story is now complete. Mr. Scott was predeceased by his wife, Reba Toney Scott, his parents, Van Cleveland Scott and Edna Smith Scott and his brother, Paul Scott. He is survived by son, John Eary of Ringgold, Ga; his daughter, Charlotte Scott Gregory and husband, Walter of Roanoke. Three granddaughters, Susan McClure (Craig) of Chattanooga. Julianne Gregory of Fairfax and Sarah Gregory of Roanoke; three great grandchildren, Tory, Jake and Abby McClure; three sisters, Nora Saul of Boones Mill, Evelyn Smith of Richmond and Rachel Hall and husband, Lawrence of Vinton; many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Garden City Baptist Church, where he served, faithfully, for many years. Mr. Scott was born in Ferrum, VA on Aug. 8, 1923, graduated from William Byrd, then enlisted in the US Army. He completed Communication and Gunner training at the US Cavalry School in Ft. Riley, KS. He was deployed to Europe for active duty in WWII. He fought on Omaha Beach on D-Day and also at the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the US Army Medal for Sharpshooter Carbine Marksmanship, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, American Theater Service Ribbon, Eastern European Service Ribbon and the WWII Victory Ribbon. After the war, he was employed as a draftsman at US Steel then later at GE. He was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He loved his God and lived his life quietly and faithfully. He adored his wife and family with all his being. His family was his world. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.7 He was buried at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, 5737 Airport Road NW, Roanoke, Virginia.7 He was born on August 8, 1923 at Ferrum, Franklin Co., Virginia.3,7,5 He married Reba Mazel Toney on August 17, 1951 at Roanoke, Virginia.4,11,7 Hubert Alvah Scott died on October 3, 2018 at Virginia at age 95.7
