Attie Maybelle "Mae" Jones was buried at Mitchem Ridge Cemetery, Mitchell's Ridge, McDowell Co., West Virginia.4 She was born on June 15, 1921 at Pilot, Montgomery Co., Virginia.5 As of January 9, 1937,her married name was Steele.3 She married Lonnie Earl "Lawnie" Steele on January 9, 1937 at Keystone, McDowell Co., West Virginia.5,6,3 Attie Maybelle "Mae" Jones died on November 1, 1940 at Bluefield, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 19; She was killed along with her husband and baby at RR crossing in Bramwell, WV.5 She Three Killed in Train-Auto Crash West of Simmons. Four others injured, one critically, when automobile crashes into shifter engine on branch line. A McDowell county father, mother and their 2-year-old son were killed and four other persons were injured, one critically, shortly after 7 o’clock last night when the auto in which they were riding crashed into a shifter engine operating on the Simmons branch line to the Buckeye Coal and Coke comapny operation about 1 mile west of Simmons. The dead are Lawnie Steele, 24, of Keystone; Mrs. Lawnie Steele, 20 and Cecil Steele, their 2-year-old son. The injured are Earl Steele, aged, 3, son of the dead man and wife; Edith Jones, 17, of Northfork, sister of Mrs. Steele; G. T. Steele, of Northfork, brother of Lawnie Steele, and Mary Combs, 18, of Northfork, daughter of Floyd Combs. Physicians at St. Luke's hospiatl said the Combs girl has little chance for recovery. She sustained puncture of both lungs, a fractured skull, broken arm, leg and back injuries. She had not regained consciousness last midnight, and had been in an oxygen tent since her arrival at the South Bluefield hospital. The dead and injured persons were returning home from Christiansburg, Va. where they attended funeral services yesterday afternoon for the father of Mrs. Steel and Edith Jones. The accident occurred past a hook curve on Route 52 between Simmons and Maybeury . Witnesses said the auto, a Plymouth sedan driven by Lawnie Steele, crashed into and partially ran under the tender of the shifter engine, and was knocked a distance of fifty feet before it came to a stop . The car was totally wrecked. Mary Combs, one of the dead, was thrown clear of the spinning auto a distance of about twenty feet in to a ditch. Passersby rushed all seven occupants of the auto to Bluefield hospitals. All except Mary Combs were brought to Bluefied sanitarium; she to St. Luke's hospital. Cecil Steele, the two-years-old baby, was dead upon arrival. His mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Lawnie Steele, died one and two hours apart respectively. G. G. Steele, 19, brother of the dead man, sustained fractures of the leg and body and head abrssions. He was employed until recently by A. R. Thompson, lumber contractor of Northfork, who also employed Lawnie Steele. Edith Jones received fractures of the thigh, a broken nose and face lacerations. Earl Steele, 3, sustained possible fractured skull, shoulder and abdominal injuries. Physicians at Bluefleld sanitarium, where all three are patients, said their chances for recovery are good. Lawnie Steele died of chest injuries, fractured hip, deep lacerations of the forehead, probable fractured skull and body lacerations. His wife died of a fractured skull, broken left arm, right wrist and left thigh, body and face lacerations and shock. Cecil Steele, the 2-years-old baby probably died of skull fracture, physicians said. The engine, Norfolk and Western officials said last night, was backing across the highway when the crash occurred. Engineer George Lavinder Conductor Leo J. Long said that the locomotive tender was equipped with a powferful headlamp and that whistle and bell signals were made as the locomotive approached and crossed the roadway. A standard crossing warning stands at the crossing. The train, Norfolk and Western officials said was moving at a rate of speed of about 10 miles per hour. The Steele car, it was reported, was travelling at a high rate of speed. Funeral arrangements for the dead have not been made. The bodies were taken late last night to Northfork Funeral home. on November 2, 1940.7

Martin Sr. was born on August 21, 1917 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2,8 He died on July 14, 2001 at Virginia at age 83.2,8 He MARTIN, Frank W., 83, of Roanoke, passed away, Saturday, July 14, 2001. Mr. Martin was born at Midnight on August 21, 1917 in Roanoke. Frank was a graduate of Jefferson High School where he obtained his diploma during night school after returning from duty in the Philippines during World War II. One of the early jobs that he held was delivering feed for the feed store on the Roanoke City Market. The job was driving a mule and wagon delivering feed to the outlying farms in the area. Later he worked at the Radford Arsenal prior to entering the army. Frank attended boot camp at Fort Ord, California near San Francisco and was then assigned to the 614 t h Ordinance Ammo Co. in the Philippine Islands during World War II. He has continued his relationship with the fine men of this company throughout the years and always attended the reunions in Lancaster, Pa., twice hosting the reunion at his home here in Roanoke. After the Japanese surrender and his return to the United States, Frank worked in the Insurance Division of Flora Realty Co. until he founded Flora and Martin Insurance Corp., a business that he kept until 1986. While in the insurance business he also started building homes working as Frank W. Martin Contractor, drilling wells operating as Frank W. Martin Well Drilling. During his well drilling career he drilled many residential wells, core drilled for Lewis Gale Hospital, Community Hospital and drilled the elevator shafts for the Pipestem Resort. In 1967 he donated his time and service to drill a well for a new building on the Virginia Tech Campus for the future study of Geophysics. Later that year, Ferrum College was in a crisis situation when their water source went dry, Frank went down to the school and donated his time and service again to get them the water that they needed in order to keep the classrooms open. As a member of the Virginia Well Drillers Association he served on the state Ad-Hoc Committee of Well Drillers and encouraged colleges to add curriculum on well water systems. Frank was a commercial and residential developer / builder. He was instrumental in developing sub-divisions in Oak Grove and Back Creek in Roanoke County and November Shores at Smith Mountain Lake. He and his partner, Larry Hartman formed Carlton Land Company and were well known for the building of Long John Silvers and Pizza Inn Restaurants. More recently he was the founder and president of Martin Homes, Inc. until an accident forced his retirement several years ago. A member of the Cave Spring Lions Club since 1947, he was awarded various awards including Lion of the Year, Melvin Jones Fellow and Lifetime membership. During his membership he saw many changes in the clubhouse, from the club's first home at the old Cave Spring Baptist Church to the Cave Spring Lions Club and later to the rebuilding of the clubhouse after near destruction from fire. He served as the President from 1956-1957. Other achievements include serving as an Advisory Board Member on the Cave Spring Rescue Squad, Advisory Board of Central Fidelity Bank, Cave Spring Branch. He is a former Chairman of the Roanoke County Board of Zoning Appeals and was appointed several times to the Highway Commission Condemnation Board. The National Secretaries Association of Roanoke elected him boss of the year in 1972. An avid hunter and lover of nature he experienced many exciting trips to Wyoming and Alaska. Many shared in his conquests of fowl, wild boar, elk, bear and salmon. He had many happy memories of Bear Path Hunt Club in Bath County where he kept the "pot" stirred for many years. He is also a member of Truro Haunts Hunt Club. Who else but Frank Martin would purchase and donate a commercial grade cook stove to a hunting camp just because they were cooking on an old iron coal stove. The members of Truro Haunts have all gained a few pounds because of his generosity. His generosity has helped many High School seniors pay for college by establishing the Cave Spring Lions Club Scholarship Fund administered through the Foundation for Roanoke Valley. He loved life and loved being around people. His contagious laugh was unique, as was his love for hats. He had a wonderful personality that seemed to fill any room. How many were benefactors of his generosity by his slipping and paying for their dinner ticket after seeing them in restaurants or perhaps it was a box of candy at Christmas or his boisterous greeting of "Hey, how ya doing" or "Hello Dear" combined with a warm gentle hug. Frank was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth J. Martin; his parents, Henry Boyle Martin and Ida Wickham Martin; brother, H.H. "Pete" Martin; sisters, Georgia Lloyd and Kathleen Martin. Survivors include his wife, Nancy F. Martin; children and spouses, Frank W., Jr., and Susan Martin, Shepherdsville, Ky., Mary M. and Glenn Metheny, Bruce J. Martin and Keith L. and Kathy Martin, all of Roanoke, Andy and Sharon Martin of Salem; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his secretary of 37 years, Sophia Moticha; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Ralph Barnett, Gertrude and Ralph Good, Helen and Bill Deck, Rita Richardson and Bertie Sue and Bill Selvey. His family and friends will miss Frank, he touched so many lives, helped so many people. His good deeds will live on for years to come. Even if you do not know it, every day you will see something that he has built, fixed, or made better in some way. You simply cannot live in the Roanoke Valley without seeing his work. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at Cave Spring Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cave Spring Lions Club Scholarship Fund through the foundation for Roanoke Valley, 310 1 s t Street, SW, Roanoke, Va. 24011 or to Cave Spring Baptist Church Building Fund, 4873 Brambleton Avenue, SW, Roanoke, Va. 24018.
