Winston Lee Underwood Winston Lee Underwood, 78, of Roanoke beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend peacefully slipped away to join his Savior in heaven on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Winston grew up in the New River Valley and remained close with many of his childhood friends throughout his lifetime. He obtained an Associate’s Degree from Emmanuel College, where he went on to serve on the Board of Trustees for many years to come. He treasured the friendships made there and kept in touch with several classmates until his death. He established a scholarship fund at Emmanuel that will continue to touch the lives of many. He received his bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and his master’s degree with post-graduate studies from Virginia Tech. He dedicated many years of his life to education. He served as a principal for Botetourt County School System and as Director of Career Education for the Title 3 project in Bedford County. He also worked with WBRA to film productions in Career Education for PBS. In 1983, he left his work with public education to explore a life-long interest in real-estate. He went on to establish his own firm, Winn & Company Realty, where he developed many professional relationships with numerous realtors, banking institutions and community members, as well as, being actively involved with the Roanoke Valley Board of Realtors until 2012. He was a dedicated church member of Lakeside Baptist Church. He enjoyed all aspects of his involvement with his “church family”. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Beulah Underwood, and his brother, Raymond Underwood. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife, Carolyn; two daughters and their husbands: Karen and Darrell Sheppard of Blacksburg and Sharon and Dean Ramsey of Wake Forest, NC; three sons and their wives: Jonathan and Tori Underwood of Salem, Christopher and Candice Underwood of Roanoke, and Jason and Cheryl Underwood of Christiansburg. He also leaves his memory forever ingrained in the hearts of his fourteen grand-children: Jessi and Emily Strom, Spencer and Andrew Ramsey, Chloe and Caden Underwood, Sierra Bowen, Caleb and Blake Underwood, and Elijah, Micah, Noah, Josiah, and Willah Underwood. His love for his family was evident in all that he did. When his mother, father, and brother neared the end of their lives, he was there, holding their hand and showering them with his love. He opened his home for 18 years (until her death) to his Mother-in-Law after she suffered a devastating stroke. He was a devoted father to his five children, sharing each one’s individual journey from childhood all the way to becoming parents. He coached and supported them in whatever ways he could, sharing the joys, learning from the experiences and drying the tears along the way. As an active follower of Christ, he raised his children to first and foremost, always put their faith in God. He found enormous joy in all that he did with both his children and grandchildren; they could not have found a more devoted fan, friend, father or grandfather. From sports to fishing and hunting, from school recitals to graduations, from holidays to everyday life, he was constantly present in their lives, loving every minute of it. A celebration of Winston’s life will be held at Lakeside Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 11 AM with Rev. Carl Goodman officiating. Interment Sunset Memorial Gardens in Christiansburg. Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Oakey’s North Chapel, 6732 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke.4 He was buried at Sunset Cemetery, North Franklin Street, Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.4 He was born on July 2, 1938 at Floyd, Floyd Co., Virginia.5 He and Carolyn Sue Johnson were divorced on June 10, 1967 at Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.7 Winston Lee Underwood married Carolyn Sue Johnson, daughter of Elmer Randolph Johnson and Dorothy Mildred Light, on June 10, 1967 at Radford, Virginia.5 Winston Lee Underwood married Carolyn Sue Johnson, daughter of Elmer Randolph Johnson and Dorothy Mildred Light, on June 20, 1973 at Wythe Co., Virginia.5 Winston Lee Underwood died on October 15, 2016 at Virginia at age 78.4
