     Frank Hendrick DeWease was buried at Centennial Christian Church Cemetery, McCoy, Montgomery Co., Virginia.² He was born on April 10, 1905 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^2,3 He married Macie Florence Fagg circa 1929.^7,8 Frank Hendrick DeWease died on April 18, 1946 at McCoy, Montgomery Co., Virginia, at age 41.^2,9,4,10 He Radford, Va., April 18 - Twelve miners operating at a low level in one of the state's few anthracite coal diggings died today in a blast that caught them 5,000 feet from the hillslope entrance. The shattering force blew a train of 14 mine cars more than half a mile away in the mine 150 feet up an inclined track. Mine Superintendent Cloyd Martin who was riding the cars, was knocked from the train. Ironically, Virginia's worst mine explosion in years came at a time when all but a fraction of the 18,000 Virginia miners were "laying off" during the UMW-operator contract negotiations. The state's anthracite or semi-anthracite as it is known to the miners, comprises only about 200,000 tones of the 18 million ton-total of bituminous and anthracite produced annually. It is not as hard as the Pennsylvania variety.
The Great Valley Anthracite corporation's mine at nearby McCoy had only 58 miners at work when the blast -- ostensibly from gas -- occurred. The 12 victims were at the lowest level of the sloping tunnel which runs under New River. Other workers some distance removed from the explosion point escaped with minor burns or ill effects from the fumes. A rescue squad from Radford donned gas masks and made its way to the site shortly after the explosion. Eleven were found dead of burns. The twelfth miner, Paul Price, was brought to the surface but died without regaining consciousness at a hospital here. Rescue workers from West Virginia assisted the Virginia squad in bringing out the others, all of whom could be recognized. All of the dead were residents of McCoy, a small community whose main source of livelihood is from the mine. They were: Paul Price, Herman Sifford, Cecil Hancock,
J. P. Price, Frank Price, C. R Johnson, Ed Ritter, Frank DeWeese, John Duncan, Dave Graham, J. L. Sarver, and Hoge Sifford. on April 19, 1946.⁹ He McCOY, April 18 - A terrific explosion, believed caused by gas occurring about 11 A. M. at the bottom of the Great Valley Anthracite Coal Corporation's mine, a half mile below the bed of New River, snuffed out the lives of 12 miners today, plunging this tiny Montgomery County community into grief. All but one of the men apparently were instantly killed. The twelfth died soon after reaching a hospital in near-by Radford. Forty-six other miners made their way to safety after the explosion, fighting their way in some instances through choking smoke and noxious fumes. Most of the survivors were severely shaken up, but none was badly injured. Cloyd Martin, of Radford, general superintendent of the mine, said he was approximately half way between the entrance and the point of the explosion when it occurred. The force of the blast, he said, knocked him from the train of nine cars on which he was riding and blew the train about 150 feet back up a sharp incline. The superintendent's office listed the dead and their dependents as: R. Cecil Hancock, wife and 10 children. Paul Price, wife and five children. Frank R. Price, brother of Paul, wife and four children. J. P. Price, wife and four children. C. R. Johnson, wife and four children. Frank H. Dewease, wife and three children. John A. Duncan, married, no children. George H. Sifford, wife and seven children. Harmon Sifford, wife and six children. Dave L. Graham, wife and four children. J. L. Sarber, wife and three children. Edward Ritter, wife and several children, all grown. All of the victims lived either in the mining camp adjacent to the mine entrance or in surrounding communities. The bodies were removed from the mine and taken to Radford funeral parlors to await burial plans early tonight. The only one of those fatally injured who emerged from the mine alive was Paul Price, who was found near the point at which the explosion occurred, sitting upright, pounding on one of the mine car rails with a rock. Crockett Hungate, who was working some distance from the point of the explosion, was one of the first rescue group to reach the victims. That was about two hours after the blast, he said. Paul and Frank Price were cousins of his wife. "Paul was sitting there beating on a rail and shouting," said Hungate, "I yelled to him that we were coming. We passed several dead men before we got to him but I couldn't recognize any of them except Frank Dewease. He's my cousin and was the biggest one down there. That's the only way I could tell it was him. "Paul kept shouting. When we got him back to the air he said he was freezing and we wrapped him up. We couldn't tell anything else he was saying except he was cold." Hungate joined the rescue team after he and Emmett D. Albert, his brother-in-law. with whom he had been working, had made, their way back to the entrance. "When she went off, I knew what had happened." said Hungate. We broke and ran toward the entrance. It was over a mile. We didn't meet one until we got near the entrance. Then we saw Benny McCoy, who works on the tipple. He was going down on the trip (the mine car train) and I warned him not to run over nobody who might of been on the tracks." He said that he then helped gather rescue equipment and joined a party of about eight including Tom Little, mine foreman, and Charlie Albert, assistant foreman. The party went back into the about an hour after the blast occurred, Hungate said, but the smoke and fumes made their progress slow. "We had to take air with us." he said, explaining that they had to restore air passages torn out by the explosion. It was about two hours, he estimated, before the rescue team reached the scene of the blast. He said they had gas in the rescue party but masks, were not much help, and the rescue workers could not stay beyond the point where fresh plentiful for very long periods. After determining that the rest of the men working near the scene of the blast were dead, they came out. Fresh teams worked in relays with the help of employees of the States Bureau of Mines, bringing out the bodies. The exact cause of the explosion was not determined immediately, since all at the scene perished, but Superintendent Martin said that a charge set off in the coal vein probably ignited a "feeder" of gas. The force of the blast was felt throughout the mine, but only smoke billowing through the entrance tipped off those working outside the mine as to what had happened. Outside no noise was audible. Brady Linkous, who was working in the "entry" next to the one in which the blast occurred, said he and Houston Semones, John Howell and Romery "Preacher" Solomon, tried to make their way to the main shaft but were blocked by smoke and fumes. He said they knocked a hole through a wall with a mine timber and, escaped into another entry. "When the explosion came," said Linkous, "it felt like everything was quivering. I couldn't hear anything. It was like something was slapped over your head." The Great Valley Anthracite Corporation's slope-type operation has been producing between 8,000 and 10,000 tons of coal a month. G. C. Barnes, professor of electrical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute near-by Blacksburg, said Professor L. I. Cothern, head of the department of mining engineering at VPI, arrived at the mine an hour after the explosion with the college's two oxygen masks and personally led a crew of rescue workers into the gas-filled depths of the mine. The explosion occurred 6,000 feet from the mine mouth at a point a half mile below the bed of the river, Professor Barnes said. A rescue crew of the Federal Bureau of Mines, which came here from Mt. Hope, W. Va., assisted in removal of the bodies. Five bodies were brought out by 5 P. M. on April 19, 1946.¹⁰

As a young woman, Muriel attended National Business College and then became a stay-at-home mother. Later, she was an Avon products saleswoman, and worked for Lotz Funeral Home, Leggett department store and Sears Telecatalog. Muriel was active in the community as a President of The Roanoke Valley Extension Homemakers Club, and a participant in both Sweet Adelines and the Senior's Kitchen Band. She eagerly anticipated her opportunity to serve as an election official at local polling venues. Many will remember Muriel as a Salem Farmer's Market vendor, selling apple butter, honey and baked goods. Other hobbies included crafting, apple butter making, canning and sewing. As a member of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren, Muriel was active in The Quilting Bee and in other projects which involved helping others. She enjoyed playing the harmonica, listening and dancing to Country and Hawaiian music, and interacting with her beloved cat, Echo. Although she had many interests, Muriel treasured her family above everything. She planned various activities, including picnics, luaus, and swimming parties, to ensure that her loved ones gathered to celebrate family unity. She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn Farris, Billie Reid, Joyce Schneider, Marie Bliss and her husband, David. Also surviving are grandchildren, Renee Wise, Jason Gwinn, Chris Gwinn, Holly Farris, Aaron Mayes, Jacob Mayes, Rachel Roberts, Hannah Widener, Levi Reed, and Will Bliss. She has 16 great-grandchidren and one great-great-granddaughter. Muriel is also survived by a sister, Nora Epperly; brother-in-law, Daniel Bayer; and many nieces and nephews. Cancer took her life, but not her spirit. Born on November 8, 1927, she was the youngest child born to Minnie and Maynard Dewease. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Cardon Dewease; sisters, Eva Jones and Ruby Pearl; and a beloved brother-in-law, Thomas Harold Turner. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 61 years, Daniel; sons, Elliott and daughter-in-law, Kenna, and Ralph and daughter-in-law, Cathy; and daughter, Minnie. Also surviving are sisters, Nora Epperly, of Salem, and Muriel Turner, of Roanoke; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews, all very special to her. Ogretta was a life-long member of Peters Creek Church of the Brethren, enjoying numerous activities within the church family as her health permitted. After retirement from General Electric, she worked for many years at Stritesky's Flower Shop. She enjoyed working with flowers and the people she met there. She was also very skilled at baking and decorating wedding cakes, as well as organizing and directing many weddings and receptions. She did volunteer work with Roanoke County and organizations such as Valley Beautiful, Roanoke Garden Clubs and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, judging exhibits at the Salem Fair. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and a member of the College of Regents. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. on January 1, 2010.²

Mrs. Dewease was retired from Rockwell Automation where she worked in the Human Resource Department. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Leola Sirmons Collins and her husband, Arlton "Bud" Dewease. Mrs. Dewease passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Fairview Park Hospital. She is survived by her son, Mark Dewease (Shelbie) of Dublin, daughter, Amy Reagan (Tony) of Statesboro, and her brother, Ronnie Collins of Wrightsville.
