He was the son of the late Samuel Lee and Pearl Withrow Hardman of Clay. He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II and was a member of the battle group to which the Japanese emperor surrendered. Ray started his career with Hardman & Hardman Funeral Home, Clay, and retired from Atlantic Greyhound Lines after 17 years of service. He served as a member of Flotilla 2-1 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Charleston, and served one term as Flotilla commander. He also served as president of the Greyhound Retirees Club for over 20 years and was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union. He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Myers; and brother, Norman Hardman. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lenore Samples Hardman; a son and his wife, Ed and Dianna of Winston Salem, N.C; a daughter and her husband, Cidney and John Keith of Erie, Pa; grandchildren, John David Keith and Lauren Lisa Keith of Erie, Pa., Michael Hardman and wife, Courtney, of Winston Salem; and great-granddaughter, Taylor Anne Hardman of Winston Salem. Entombment, with military rites, will follow in Graceland Memorial Park. on November 21, 2004.1

He was born April 6, 1927, in Ivydale, WV, to Willis Henry Hill and Lula Jane (Wood) Hill. A graduate of West Virginia University and an alumnus of Alpha Gamma Rho, Mr. Hill also attended First United Methodist Church in Rockwall, TX. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a vocational agriculture teacher at Clay High School and later worked as a sales rep for the Allied Chemical and Arcadian Chemical Corporations. Mr. Hill retired from both companies. He and Dixie resettled in Texas in 1992, to be near their children. Mr. Hill is survived by his loving wife of 63 years: Dixie Hill; children: Dr. John Philip Hill and wife Linda of Rockwall, and Ruth Ann Hill of Rowlett; grandchildren: Rev. Nathaniel Hill and wife Candice of Winchester, TX, and Vicki Hill of Giddings, TX; great grandchild: John Barrett Hill; and cousin: Jim Johnson; along with a host of loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister: Mamie Hill; and sister: Anna Morris and husband Dallis. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He held life membership in the VFW Post 4419 in Clay, American Legion Post 21 of Spencer, and in WVEA. He had served in Headstart Programs, sports activities for the youth, and was a member of Burke M.E. Church of Procious. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Mae Woodall on April 1, 1956, and his stepson, Robert "Wag" Allen Gandee on November 10, 1996. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Samples Gandee Boggs; son, Hugh III and wife, Barbara, of Great Falls, Va; daughter, Debra Anne Saunders and husband, John, of Leesburg, Va; brothers, Fred Boggs of Charleston, and Gail Boggs of Toronto, Ohio; sisters, Jean Boggs of Ivydale, Janet Crisco of Charleston; grandchildren, Peter, Michael and Christin Boggs of Great Falls, Va., Laura Burhenn of Washington, D.C; stepgrandchildren, Rob Busser of McLean, Va., and Karmin Gandee Richmond, Tabitha Gandee and Troy Gandee, all of Princeton; stepgreat-grandchildren, Katy, David, Stephen and Jacob Busser of McLean, Va., and Jenna Grace Gilmore, and Tyler Richmond of Princeton, W.Va. Burial will follow in Clay Memorial Gardens, Clay, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by Clay VFW Post 4419. on July 11, 2004.1

He worked as an electrician for O. B. Williams for over 25 years retiring in the late 80's. He was a member of the Camden/Wyoming Moose Lodge and the Masons Lodge #7. Mr. Samples enjoyed gardening, cars and his gamecocks. Mr. Samples was preceded in death by three sisters, Madeline Nutter, Agnes Stone, and Kathleen Duesenburry; two brothers, Carlos and Zane Samples. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Diane (Hoffecker) Samples; three sons, Michael of Smyrna, Keith of Dover, and Randall of Dover; three daughters, Kimberly DePietro of New Hampshire, Kelli Croft of Dover, and Lisa Michelle Hogan of Maine; two brothers, Joe Samples and Paul Samples, both of W.Va; five sisters, Dessie Shamblin of Ohio, Nina Mae Montileone and Anna Fay Matthews of Fla. Nancy Melvin of W.Va., and Coral Jane of Ohio; six grandchildren, Jennifer Hager, Tania Chabot, Brandy and Ashley DePietro, and Jason and Michael Samples Jr; and a greatgrandson, Ryan Commeau. He will be missed so much by his family. Graveside services will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery, 35 Rising Sun Road, Camden. on June 16, 2010.2

Dessie graduated from Clay County High School and had worked for Superior Aluminum. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hubbard and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. Dessie enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, fishing and was a huge Elvis and Willie Nelson fan. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was known for her homemade biscuits. Her husband, Virgil D. “Bud” Shamblin, whom she married March 15, 1954, died March 9, 2000. She leaves two sons, Bill Joe (Diane) Shamblin of Hubbard and David R. Shamblin (Sharon Coxson) of Hubbard; a daughter, Debbie L. Barr (Bob Johnson) of Hubbard; 5 siblings, 7 grandchildren and 6 ½ great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 8 siblings.      Paul Franklin Samples Paul F. Samples, 74, of Nebo, WV passed peacefully October 13, 2016 after a long illness. He was born May 11, 1942, a son of the late Enos and Hazel Davis Samples. Paul was a devoted member of Risen Lord Catholic Church in Maysel, WV. Paul was a graduate of Clay County High School, Class of 1960. He participated in many sports and especially loved playing for the Panthers football team, becoming captain his senior year. After graduating, Paul moved to Buffalo, NY and worked as a machine operator for Dunlap Tire and Rubber Co. where he excelled at his job. Any and all suggestions that Paul made to improve the quality of their products were implemented. He was a valued employee and retired after 28 years. Paul and his wife, Paulette, returned to Clay County in 1995, where Paul got involved in raising Rocky Mountain horses until he became ill. Paul was passionate about his family, friends, working his land and reading. Paul was known for his quiet strength which his family so admired. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Carlos, Norman, Zane, and Joseph Samples; and sisters, Madaline Nutter, Kathleen Duesenberry, Agnes Stone, and Dessie Marie Shamblin. Paul is survived by his loving wife, Paulette (Sheer) Samples; children, Bruce (Erin) Jacobs of WI; Karen Jacobs of NY; Dawn (Kyle) Schultz of WV; Mark (Donna) of SC; Sean (Allyson) of SC; Stacy of AK; and Matthew of NY; grandchildren, Bruce and John of WV; Dylan (Brittan) Jacobs, Delaney, Michaeleen and Nolan of WI; Meghan (Adam) Butler, Kenneth (Katie) Chriswell, Angelica Samples, Kody, Christopher and Emily Schultz of Nebo, WV; and Shaina Samples of NY; great-grandchildren, Allison Butler and Gavin Chriswell of WV and Reyna and Brody Jacobs of WI. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2016 at the Risen Lord Catholic Church, 67 Wallback Rd., Maysel, WV. Friends and family are welcome.4 He married Paulette Sheer.4 Paul Franklin Samples was born on May 11, 1942 at West Virginia.4 He died on October 13, 2016 at West Virginia at age 74.4
