Ex-Prisoners of War. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He worked for Dupont for 41 years before retiring. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home chapel by Brother B.G. Langston. Burial with military honors will be in Cross Creek Cemetery. Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife, Hazel S. Stephens of Fayetteville; two daughters, Ann Schronce of Hope Mills and Jeanne Jones of Raeford; two sons, Stephen Stephens of Victoria, Texas, and Edwin Stephens of Arlington, Texas; two sisters, Garnet Robinson of Shrewsbury, W.Va., and Jeane Martin of Cross Lanes, W.Va; two brothers, Delbert Stephens of Beaumont, Texas, and Ronald Stephens of Valdosta, Ga; and eight grandchildren. on December 4, 2000.4

They moved to Minford in 1954. Gary was retired from Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, after 38 years. He was also owner and gunsmith at Gary Grose Gun Shop near Minford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Mary Grose, infant son John Gary, sisters Doris Caroline Grose and Ruth Bogard, brother Clarence Grose, and granddaughter Ashli Jolly. He is survived by his brother, Roy Grose of Procious, WV, 3 daughters, Marilyn (Ron) Erion of Spearfish, SD, Lou Ann Grose of Piketon, and Carolyn (Robert) Waddell of Minford; 5 grandchildren, Andy Erion, Jason McGoron, Jessie Bear, Joshua Keaton and Allyson Waddell, 10 great-grandchildren and his partner, Betty Daniels. Then 10 years at Clendenin Lumber, promoted to VP, later he started politics and commercial businesses in Clay County: Samples Market and Samples Building Supply, 12 years as Clay County Commissioner. After earning a "University of Hard Knocks" degree from Jim Comstock and Alderson Broaddus, he earned a Regents Bachelor of Arts from Glenville State College in 1980. In 1988, he accepted the position as Supervisor of Clay County DOH, and finally in 1991 he took the camp manager position at the Advent Christian Camp Ground in Santa Cruz, California. He loved to travel and visited several countries in Europe and completed a goal of visiting all 50 of the United States. In keeping with his favorite, and most-known, piece of wisdom and advice passed down to all who loved him was "fake it till you make it," and he certainly made it. He had a passion for creating welded metal art sculptures for friends and family. He had an amazing ability to see a pile of scrap metal as people, horses, dogs, flowers, bugs, dinosaurs and more. These sculptures are sprinkled about all over the country and are prized possessions to those friends and family members. Preceded in death by parents Jake (1941) and Eva Samples (1997); his first wife of 58 years, Nora "Carmin" Samples (2006); his daughter, Vicki Paxton Samples (1995); sister, Violet Claire Wyche (2010); and brothers, "Boy Roy" (Tony) Samples (2019), Dickie (1971) and Mark (1932). He is survived by his Bride, Judy Samples; his sisters, Phillis Joy Samples, Garnet Kay "Katie" Khan, and Sherry Bassy; daughter, Vivian Yvonne Maynor, grandchildren, Abraham Jones, Jill Grandchamp, and Jodi Grimm; and great - grandchildren, Jordan and Justin Jones, Dylan, Cameron, and Morgan Grandchamp, and Luke, Tyler, Emily, and Bryce Grimm. on October 8, 2019.2

Siders drowned at about 2:30 p.m. and his body was recovered by Clendenin Fire Department Rescue Squad at about 3:30 p.m. Siders is also survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Siders of Elkview; brother, Jackie, at home; and sister, Debbie, at home. Siders' body is at Knight-Young Funeral Home in Clendenin. on June 2, 1969.1

Nadine McKown, 66, of Spencer died Thursday, December 15, 2005, at her home, surrounded by her family, after an extended illness. She was born February 28, 1939, in Clay County, and was a daughter of the late Tommy A. and Ruby A. Samples. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C.I. "Buddy" McKown, Sr., and one brother, Neal Samples. Mrs. McKown retired in 1995 after 30 years of service in education. At the time of her retirement, she was director of personnel and director of curriculum and instruction for the Roane County Board of Education. Among her accomplishments were starting kindergarten classes in Linden, Newton, Left Hand and Walton schools. Also, she was the first principal of the Geary School, Left Hand. She formerly taught classes at Glenville State College and was an adjunct professor at COGS. She was a member of the W.Va. Association of Retired Teachers. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Morris Harvey College, master's degrees in both early childhood education and education administration from COGS. Also, she was a member of the Roane County Republican Executive Committee and the Roane County Republican Women's Club, a member of the Newton Baptist Church and the Eastern Star. She was a past member of the Delta Kappa Gamma. Nadine was very active in 4-H, serving as club leader and various other capacities. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, C.I. "Sam" and Feli McKown of Newton; three grandchildren, Isaac, Quincy and Victoria McKown; brother, Garrett Samples of Clendenin; two sisters, Emogene Morris of Jacksonville, Fla., and Karen Dawson of Ovapa; and a godchild, Jill Jett of Little Hocking, Ohio. Burial will be in the King-Kirkhart Cemetery, Newton. on December 17, 2005.6

He enjoyed reading, following the Mountaineers, the Herd and, most of all, spending time with his family. It was Dexter's wish to donate his body to Human Gift Registry so he could continue giving in death as he did in life, hoping to find a cure for cancer. on December 24, 2013.4
