Smith, 83, former assistant postmaster here, died yesterday morning at his home on Mt. View avenue after an illness of about three weeks. Mr. Smith was in an automobile accident last February and had not been in good health since that time. He succumoed to a heart attack. He was born July 6, 1878, in Doniphan, Kanasas, the son of Albert B. Smith. He was first employed at the local postoffice in 1901 as a mall carrier, then be became a clerk and later a superintendent of mails. In 1920 he was appointed assistant postmaster at the local office and served in that capacity until he wae retired seven years ago. Since his retirement from the postal service he has been employed by the Southern Office Supply company. He was working there when he first became ill. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ollie M. Smith, two brothers, H. E. and Byron, both of Denver Colorado, and three sisters, Mrs. Inez Wade, of Denver; Mrs. Guy Edwards of Greeley, Colo., and Mrs. Herman Libel of Leona Kansas. He was a member of the Masons, the Elks and the Eagles on October 2, 1941.5

     Steven Carlyle "Steve" Conner Steven Carlyle Conner, 68, of Salem, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, December 18, 2020. He was born in Roanoke, a son of the late Elmo and Mary Rhodes Conner and was an area resident all his life. He proudly served his country in Vietnam, in the United States Marine Corps, and was Honorably Discharged following the war. Steve was employed as a HVAC Technician for many years and enjoyed going to the shooting range, fishing and road trips, most of all, he enjoyed doing these things with, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Martha Reynolds Conner; a son, Steven Wayne Conner; his daughter, Jenny Conner and her husband Steve Obenshain; grandchildren, Victoria Conner and Scott Addair, Nick Conner and Chris Conner; a brother, Thomas Daniel Conner; brother-in-law, Daniel Madison; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fisher, and numerous nieces and nephews. In honor of Steven's service to his country, a graveside service with Military Honors will be held at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery 5550 Bagging Plant Rd. Dublin, VA 24084 at 1PM, Monday, December 28, 2020 with Pastor Greg Irby officiating.4 He was buried at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, Pulaski Co., Virginia.4 He was born on October 6, 1952 at Roanoke, Virginia.3,4 He married Martha Miller Reynolds, daughter of Cecil Black Reynolds and Ruth Muncy, on October 7, 1974 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4 Steven Carlyle "Steve" Conner died on December 18, 2020 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 68.4
