Willis, 34-year-old Beckley plumber who was killed in an automobile accident at Hurricane Saturday night, will be conducted Tuesday. The body will be placed in a mausoleum at Sunset Memorial park after the services. Mr. Willis was fatally injured when his automobile sideswiped an automobile freighter on a bridge one mile from Hurricane. The accident occurred at 9:30 Saturday night and his death came about three hours later. Relatives said last night that his three-year-old son, Donald, would have been killed had Mr. Willis not shoved him from his lap when he saw an accident was inevitable. Donald, like other members of the family, suffered only minor injuries. All were treated at a Charleston hospital shortly after the mishap. Mr. and Mrs. Willis and their four children left Beckley at 5 p.m. Saturday for Portsmouth, O., where they planned to visit his mother and other relatives. Upon arriving in Charleston they stopped for a short visit with Mrs. Willis’ sister, Mrs. J. E. Lilly. They left Charleston at about eight o’clock. Mr. Willis’ death was caused by a fracture of the skull. He suffered also a fractured left arm. Born in Beckley on October 9, 1903, he was the son of E. E. Willis and Mrs. Cora Terry Willis. He was a member of the Elks and Moose lodges. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Cora Mary Willis, Beckley; four children, Marion Willis, 11; Bessie Mae Willis, 9; Virginia Dare Willis; and Donald Willis, 3; his mother, Mrs. Cora Terry Willis, Portsmouth, O; three brothers H. H. Willis, and Earl Willis, both of Portsmouth; and William Willis, Charleston; and three sisters, Mrs. J. E. Lilly, Charleston, Mrs. Lee A. Polley, Charleston; and Mrs. D. Goldie Marie Willis was born on January 1, 1911 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia.3 As of circa 1926,her married name was Pauley.4 She married Lee H. Pauley circa 1926.4,5 Goldie Marie Willis Mrs. Goldie Marie Pauley, 30, of near Lucasville, charged with first degree murder of her husband, Lee Pauley, will be taken this week to the slate hospital for criminal insane at Lima for observation. Common Pleas Judge B. F. Kimble Monday afternoon ordered Mrs. Pauley committed to the hospital on motion of Prosecutor Marvin A. Kelly. Defense Counsel Chester P. Filch pleaded that Mrs. Pauley was not guilty by reason of insanity at the time of the murder. Mr. Fitch and Co-Counsel George D. Nye of Waverly asked the court to appoint two psychiatrists to examine Mrs. Pauley for the purpose of offering expert testimony on the temporary insanity plea. Prosecutor Kelly said that the state does not believe Mrs. Pauley was insane at the time of the murder but since the defendant offered insanity as a defense the slate must prepare to meet the plea. He suggested that the state hospital would be the best place 1o determine her mental condition. It the hospital stall finds she is insane she will be kept at the hospital until her reason is restored. It she is found sane she will be returned here for trial at expiration of the observation period. The defense dues not claim insanity now and contends Mrs. Pauley possesses her full faculties lost her reason temporarily on the night of the murder. She confessed that she shot her husband in the back as he lay in bed because he abused and threatened her and their children. Judge Kimble appointed Mr. Fitch to defend Mrs. Pauley. The appointment entry recited that Mrs. Pauley was without counsel or funds to employ counsel. Relatives appealed to Mr. Fitch to defend her. Attorney Nye and Francis Paulson of Cleveland said they were engaged by friends to assist Mr. Fitch. on March 25, 1941.5
